Anaheim Ducks Hoist Lord Stanley's Cup
There's something basically weird about a sport's principle title having the word "Lord" attached to it; it seems to go against every grain in the (non-Bush-supporter) American ethos. Yet here are the Anaheim Ducks winning the Stanley Cup in what qualifies as a laugher in hockey, 6-2 against the Ottawa Senators, the first title in the 14-year-old team's history, and the first Cup in the state of California. Congratulations, guys.
Comments:
Don't forget, Rob, that the "nation" to which the National Hockey League first referred to was the [British] Dominion of Canada, with the original 4 teams being Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal (2 teams). Lord Stanley, the Governor-General of Canada, being the second son of the Earl of Derby, expected to spend the remainder of his life in the Dominion, until his elder brother died suddenly and he removed to the mother country to manage the family estate. In so doing, he missed the first match for the Cup awarded in his honor (honour?).
Yep, the LA Kings had at least one chance in their 40+ year history to bring home the Cup, as did the Vancouver Canucks, who've been around just about as long.
It only took the Ducks 14 years---free AT LAST of the Mighty Duck BS---to bring the Stanley Cup to the Left Coast for the first time since 1925, when the Victoria Cougars won it all.
Way to go, Ducks!!!
