Minor League Scorebook
News
- Six Kernels will appear in
the Midwest League All-Star Game:
Six players will represent the Cedar Rapids Kernels on the West Roster at the All-Star Classic: OF Chris Pettit and DH Matt Sweeney were selected as starters; C Hank Conger and INF P.J. Phillips were selected as reserve players; and LHP Doug Brandt and RHP Tim Schoeninger were selected as pitchers.
- Nathan Haynes cannot be optioned to Salt Lake
in order to make room for Maicer Izturis, who is near to
returning. Haynes has been removed from the 40-man roster three
times in his minor league career, and thus would have to pass
through waivers to send him down.
The Angels have little doubt Haynes would be claimed if they tried to option him. "We can't take him off the roster," one team official said, "or we'll lose him."
Shea Hillenbrand could be DFA'd, or Erick Aybar could be optioned. Keeping Haynes around might just have been the key to fixing Figgins' swing, according to Mickey Hatcher:"He just noticed something in my approach," Figgins said. "It helps since we're similar hitters."
More on this in the Register. - Justin Speier update:
Reliever Justin Speier, out since April 30 because of an intestinal infection, has aborted his minor league rehabilitation assignment and returned to Arizona to build stamina and attempt to rid himself of the symptoms — nausea, lack of appetite, abnormal sleep patterns — that have bothered him for six weeks.
- The Angels kept Joe Saunders with the big club through Tuesday even though he wasn't on the 25-man roster, as a precaution against Bartolo Colon's injury. Colon is throwing off flat ground and reported to be making good progress.
- The Angels have talked to Phil Seibel about a new contract
next year after he recovers from forearm flexor tendon surgery.
Seibel was unconditionally released to make room for Nathan
Haynes on the 40-man roster.
"What we said to him was, 'We need a spot on the 40-man and the arrow points to you for now,'" Angels GM Bill Stoneman said. "'If you rehab well and the doctors clear you, don't discount us talking to you about a contract down the road.' It might not be a major-league contract."
- Most of the above has been injury-related stuff, which often but not always involves minor league rehab stints, which is why it ends up in this post... this one represents both categories as the Kernels disabled Sean O'Sullivan when they called up Vladimir Veras earlier in the week. O'Sullivan has a back injury.
- Takashi Saito continues to say he won't need DL time, and is improving daily.
- Yhency Brazoban had his MRI examined by a team physician Tuesday, finding no further damage to his shoulder. He'll start throwing next week.
- Marlon Anderson could start a rehab assignment soon.
Scores
Mathis: 0-4, 2 K
Morales: 1-4, 1 K
Evans: 1-3
Gorneault: 0-3, 1 K
Rouwenhorst: (L, 5-2), 3.2 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.55 ERA
Resop: 1.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 6.54 ERA
Ex-Dirtbag (and Jered Weaver teammate) Jason Vargas and reliever Jose Santiago combined to four-hit the Bees; Vargas had a no-hitter going through the first seven innings. An eight-run fourth sealed this one for New Orleans, now 30-30; former Dodger Ricky Ledee had a three-run homer and a two-run double. The only good news of the game was the scoreless 1.2 innings pitched by Steven Shell and Jason Bulger's scoreless ninth, with two strikeouts.
The loss marked a sweep.
Porter: 2-4, 1 RBI
Wilson: 0-2, 2 BB
Collins: 1-4, 2 K
Diaz: (L, 0-2), 3.0 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.50 ERA
Amalio Diaz was named Texas League co-pitcher of the Week with Corpus Christi RHP Chance Douglass, and now look what he does.
Statia: 1-5, 1 RBI
Izturis: 0-3, 1 RBI
Johnson: 2-4, 1 2B
Toussaint: 2-4, 1 K
Smith, Co: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mosebach: (W, 6-3), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 3.53 ERA
O'Day: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.87 ERA
Rancho stomped on the Storm, with Bradley Coon driving in three and Coby Smith continuing his late hot-hitting streak, with his fourth 2-fer day in the last week; he's hitting .345/.367/.483 since May 31. Rehabbing Maicer Izturis went 0-3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Hainley Statia, who stole his way to third.
Bobby Mosebach had his ninth consecutive quality start. He seems to be getting straightened out in his second tour of the Cal League, though his lack of strikeouts continues to be a concern. Darren O'Day piled up another scoreless frame and a third with a pair of strikeouts, but remember, he's a 24-year-old University of Florida product; he should be dominating these guys. A callup to Arkansas needs to happen, and soon.
Pettit: 1-1, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
Trumbo: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 BB
Conger: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
Phillips: 1-5, 1 2B, 2 K
Bell: (W, 1-2), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.54 ERA
Arredondo: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 3.04 ERA
Madrigal: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.70 ERA
Trevor Bell's best outing of the year, and his first win as a starter in six tries.
Christopher Pettit homered, his eighth of the year, a two-run jack in the third. The Pasadena native and former Loyola Marymount Lion is currently OPSing 1.069 in the Midwest League, with a .370/.450/.619 line. All those things ought to be enough to get him some serious attention in the Baseball America 2008 Prospect Handbook.
Mark Trumbo continues to claw his way back to respectability wit a .268/.318/.436 line on the season. No, it's not good by any means, but it might be enough to give the Angels some hope that a desperation move (like sending him back to the mound as a reclamation project) won't be necessary.
And speaking of reclamation projects — Warner Madrigal pitched his second straight scoreless frame.
Kemp: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Jones, M: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Young: 0-4, 2 K
LaRoche: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 BB
Maza: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K
Juarez: (W, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.71 ERA
Mitch Jones and Matt Kemp homered in this one, leading me to wonder what Jones' future is; most likely he's a AAAA type, but like Jack Cust, perhaps there's a brief but interesting blaze of glory to be had in his future for some desperate and/or injury-riddled team.
Gonzalez, J: 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Paul: 0-4, 2 K
Dunlap: 1-3, 1 BB
Alexander: 0-1
Ojeda: 4.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 5.43 ERA
Alexander: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.87 ERA
Meloan: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.48 ERA
What went wrong with Mark Alexander? That's one of this year's haunting questions. It's been four games since he escaped with zero earned runs, but anyway in this one he got the win thanks to a generous offense that included a pair of homers from Juan Gonzalez, his first two of the season.
May: 1-3, 2 BB
Dewitt: 1-2, 2 RBI, 3 BB
De Jesus: 2-5, 1 K
Gutierrez, G: 3-4
Arias, M: (W, 4-1), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 5.12 ERA
Pratt: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.70 ERA
An ugly loss for the Mavericks, whose three errors (and ensuing three earned runs) handed the game to the 66ers, who weren't much better; starter Marlon Arias only lasted five innings and gave up three runs, all earned.
Bell: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Mattingly: 0-4, 2 K
Apodaca: 2-4, 1 K
Castillo: (L, 1-3), 6.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 12 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 6.61 ERA
Sanfler: 1.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.41 ERA
Yuck.
