Minor League Scorebook

News

New tinker: since I have less time to deal with these things than I did, games not equal to nine innings in length will have their innings count presented in the score.

Scores

2007-06-22: Salt Lake 6, Tucson 4 #
Gorneault: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Wood: 2-4, 1 BB
Morales: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Mathis: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Pavkovich: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Rouwenhorst: (W, 7-2), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.36 ERA
Gwyn: (S, 10), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.75 ERA
Jonathan Rouwenhorst picked up his second straight win in as many tries, his third in five, and also his third quality start in five starts. Given Joe Saunders' relatively stratospheric ERA, he must be wondering what a fella has to do to make it to the Show. Unfortunately, his big problem is he doesn't miss enough bats (4.72 K/9) but he rarely walks anybody (39/20 K/BB ratio). He's a little too old to be a useful part anymore (he'll be 28 later this year).

Nick Gorneault's leadoff homer in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie. Kendry Morales doubled in Brandon Wood, who reached on a two-out walk in the seventh, and scored himself on Ryan Budde's single to left.

2007-06-22: Wichita 1, Arkansas 10 #
Morrissey: 2-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Sandoval, F: 2-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
Rodriguez, S: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wilson: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Collins: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Smith, Co: 2-5
Fuller: 3-4, 1 K
Gonzalez, M: (W, 4-2), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 3.41 ERA
O'Day: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
The Travs just pounded on Wichita starter Michael Connolly, who only lasted 4.1 IP and took seven runs on the chin. Adam Morrissey hit a grand slam off reliever Juan Cedeno so that all three of his inherited baserunners scored (charged to Connolly); Freddy Sandoval followed that up with a solo shot, and Greg Porter's RBI double drove in Sean Rodriguez, who reached on a single. Five of the Travs' six runs in the fifth scored with two outs.

Darren O'Day got promoted to AA and pitched a scoreless seventh. Miguel Gonzalez got the win with a quality start plus, giving up only one run over six innings.

2007-06-22: Stockton 5, Rancho Cucamonga 2 #
Statia: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Johnson: 2-4
Ortega: (L, 4-6), 6.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 3.45 ERA
2007-06-21: Cedar Rapids 0, Burlington 6 #
Mount: 1-4
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Phillips: 0-3, 1 K
O'Sullivan: (L, 4-5), 3.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 2.94 ERA
Brandt: 3.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 2.35 ERA
Neither starter completed his game because of the rainout.
2007-06-22: Cedar Rapids vs. Burlington: Postponed: Rain #
Postponed due to rain; to be made up today as a doubleheader. There's been a lot of these lately, and I've been going back and parsing the scores as I remember games need to be played, but that's probably not a good idea. I'm going to have to start maintaining a separate database of rainouts that need completion so I don't miss any.
2007-06-22: Orem 1, Idaho Falls 4 #
Giovanatto: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Miller: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K
Jung: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1.80 ERA
Holland: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 18.00 ERA
Young-Il Jung makes his first appearance with Orem, going five innings and striking out five while giving up only a run (a solo homer) on five hits and a walk. Donato Giovanatto, who sounds like he ought to be Pinocchio's next-door neighbor, homered in the loss. He's off to a hot start in only a couple games.
2007-06-22: AZL Angels 3, AZL Cubs 5 #
Loman: 2-4, 1 2B
Dicent: 2-4, 2 K
Norman: 2-4, 1 RBI
Perez, D: 2-3, 1 K
Armstrong: 4.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.25 ERA
Manganaro: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 40.50 ERA
Flores: 2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
Southpaw prep pitcher Christopher Armstrong out of Owasso, Oklahoma was a 14th round draftee last year who saw limited action last year as a reliever (1-1, 0.90 ERA, 10 IP, 8 K, 2 BB). Here he gets his first professional start, going four innings and giving up a run, and hit a batter. Nick Managanaro, a University of South Florida product signed by the Angels as a free agent in September, 2006, gave up three runs, a blown save and took the loss.
2007-06-22: Colorado Springs 10, Las Vegas 5 #
McDougall: 2-4, 1 BB
Hoorelbeke: 0-1
LaMura: (L, 1-4), 1.2 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 7.92 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 2.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.59 ERA
Eckert: 2.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 6.46 ERA
Starter B.J. LaMura got plastered in an eight-run second inning that saw 11 Sky Sox come to the plate; that was the game right there. LaMura's only win for the 51's this year was in relief; this was his third start, and he's never even made it into the fifth inning as a starter. He'll probably end up back in the bullpen, where he was somewhat effective.

28-year-old Marshall McDougall showed up in his second game for Las Vegas in his fifth tour of AAA, all in the PCL.

2007-06-22: Carolina 4, Jacksonville 5 (7 innings) #
Paul: 2-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Hu, C: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Dunlap: 0-3, 2 K
Norrito: (W, 3-0), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.43 ERA
Troncoso: (S, 2), 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.50 ERA
The Suns led from the first inning on in this seven-inning doubleheader, though it wasn't without some surprises. Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as starter Joey Norrito hit Eric Riggs and then gave up a two-run dong to Mike Jacobs. That was all they got off him, despite giving up six hits; Norrito has a solid 2.43 ERA, and while he's not striking out as many batters as you'd like (4.40 K/9), he's barely issuing any free passes (seven all season).

The Suns came back in the bottom of the first for three runs, highlighted by A.J. Ellis's two-run RBI double. Chin-Lung Hu hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the third and walked twice as well. Xavier Paul's fifth-inning solo shot capped scoring for the Suns, and was the difference in the game.

Wright: 0-2

Akin: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 5.15 ERA
Chin-Lung Hu homered in two consecutive games, the first time this year he's done that. His dingers helped power the Suns to a sweep of the doubleheader. Wesley Wright pitched five innings of shutout ball, and between him and Brian Akin, three-hit the Mudcats over seven frames.

I don't think there's an age limit on useful-partness. I seem to recall a cat named Donnelly who did okay as a 30-year-old rookie. Ben Weber's first three full seasons, from age 31-33, turned out pretty well. Al Levine wasn't much until age 31, and we got three good years out of him. And guys like Geoff Zahn showed you could build a credible major league starting career after age 30.
