Minor League Scorebook
News
- Belated: Nick Adenhart has been placed on the 7-day DL with a sore shoulder, as of June 21.
- The Dodgers' Cody White was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week; no Angel was so named. No Angel or Dodger prospect was Offensive Player of the Week.
- Here's the weekly MILB.com wrap post.
- Dodgers and Angels who made this week's Prospect Hot Sheet:
4. Brandon Wood, 3b, Triple-A Salt Lake (Angels)
Wood has come alive in June, after slogging through April and May with six homers in 167 at-bats. He's put his poor, three-game major league tryout firmly behind him by hitting .321/.396/.667 this month with six bombs, eight doubles and 21 RBIs in 21 games.
6. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, low Class A Great Lakes (Dodgers)
Kershaw was denied a decision this week but still struck out nine in six innings. He gave up four hits and two walks.
16. Cody White, lhp, low Class A, Great Lakes (Dodgers)
Another Dodgers' southpaw, White hurled eight strong innings against South Bend this week. He allowed only one earned run and three walks while striking out five. He is now 8-5, 2.48 on the season.
- Manny Parra of the Brewers' AAA Nashville affiliate threw a perfect game against Round Rock; the last PCL perfecto was when John Wasdin tossed one on April 7, 2003. The Sounds beat the Express 3-0.
Scores
Forward: I haven't commented on the Dodger system games yet, but I will take care of that omission in the morning.
Mathis: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
Wood: 3-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Budde: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Eylward: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Porter: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Pavkovich: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Smith, Ca: 2-5, 1 3B, 2 RBI
Bonilla: (W, 6-5), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 5.69 ERA
Resop: (H, 3), 1.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.78 ERA
Brandon Wood kicked into overdrive in this one, pasting his third homer in three games on a day when the Bees hit five longballs; that tally included Mike Eylward, Greg Porter (in his first AAA appearance, woot!), and Nick Gorneault. Three of those dingers — Porter's, Mathis', and Wood's — came against Sacramento reliever David Shafer, who only made a single out while coughing up six runs, five earned in the fifth. Mathis and Wood had back-to-back homers.
There's been some talk of Wood abandoning short with the Angels' needs at third so acute, but he played shortstop today, and has been playing up the middle about every fourth or fifth game or so.
Bobby Bonilla gave up four runs over six innings, but most of the damage against was allowed by Jason Bulger, who posted his worst game of the year by allowing five runs while, like his counterpart Shafer, making only one out. Marcus Gwyn pitched the ninth and gave up a run on one hit, a solo homer by blue plate special Jeremy Brown.
Update: Greg Porter played right field.
Johnson: 2-5, 2 RBI
Sutton: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Renz: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Brewer: 3-5, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K
Reilly: 2-5, 2 RBI
Mosebach: (W, 7-5), 7.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 4.17 ERA
Brandt: (S, 1), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Nice game for Bobby Mosebach, who collected his seventh win with six strikeouts but eight hits. Doug Brandt earned his first Cal League save.
Third baseman Tadd Brewer had a season-high 3 RBI game, two of which came in the four-run ninth on an RBI triple.
Sweeney: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Knazek: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K
Perez: 2-4, 2 RBI
Phillips: 0-3, 1 BB
Bell: 3.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.23 ERA
Madrigal: (W, 3-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 3.31 ERA
Mark Trumbo walloped his seventh homer of the year, a three-run jack in the bottom of the eighth that gave the Kernels a lead they would not surrender. Beloit had a 5-0 shutout going through six and a half, but the Kernels posted four in the seventh, with Trumbo putting up a single in that inning, too.
Trevor Bell got the start but got shattered in his second-shortest appearance of the season. Blake Holler and Warner Madrigal six innings of scoreless ball the rest of the way.
Estrella: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Brossman: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Gronkowski: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Gonzalez-Lopez: 2-3, 1 RBI
Pippin: 3-5, 1 RBI
Veras: 3.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 6.00 ERA
Towns: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Holland: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.00 ERA
Schlecker: (S, 1), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
The Dodgers and Angels systems faced each other again, and the Angels won this round. Orem waited until the very end to get their licks in, posting a seven run top of the ninth in late retaliation for Ogden's six-run second. Those six runs — all that the Raptors would get — were all surrendered off Vladimir Veras, whom we hope learned a thing or two. Grodon Gronkowski drove in a pair.
Ortiz, N: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Loman: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Norman: 2-5, 1 K
Villaescusa: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Molina, R: 3.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 9.00 ERA
Torres: (BS, 1)(W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 9.00 ERA
Rosario, An: (S, 1), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
As so many of the games at this level are, this was a wild one, with tons of scoring on both sides. The Giants took an 8-4 lead into the top of the eighth, but then the Angels scored six, including one on a wild pitch by Giants reliever Geomar Patino. Seth Loman's (thank God he's not named Willy) ninth-inning homer proved the game winner, as Angel Rosario collected his first save with a perfect ninth.
Young: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Houlton: (L, 5-4), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.90 ERA
Houlton posts a quality start and loses anyway thanks to an offense that couldn't get much off Grizzlies starter Matt Palmer. Dwayne Pollok, traded to the Dodgers from the White Sox AAA Charlotte organization just before May 30, went the rest of the way, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.
Hu, C: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Tomlin: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Dunlap: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Concepcion: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
Paul: 1-3, 1 BB
Ojeda: (W, 3-4), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 4.96 ERA
Miller: (H, 1), 2.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 9.53 ERA
Meloan: (S, 15), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2.17 ERA
Jacksonville scored first in the first and never looked back, posting a four-run ninth in which the only hits were singles. Jonathan Meloan collected his 15th save of the season, getting the last two outs on called third strikes.
Mitchell: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Dewitt: 1-4, 1 RBI
De Jesus: 1-2, 1 BB
Alvarez: (W, 2-4), 6.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 5.32 ERA
Wade: (S, 6), 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1.96 ERA
The 66ers led this one all the way, and Mario Alvarez posted a quality start plus in his third start of the season; he is 2-1 as a starter this year.
Mattingly: 2-4, 1 K
Santana: 1-2, 1 BB
White, G: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 3.20 ERA
Gomez de Segura: (BS, 1)(L, 0-2) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 10.29 ERA
Mathews: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Jansen: 1-3, 2 BB
Kanaby: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Brooks, D: 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 4.50 ERA
Brannon: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Koss: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 21.00 ERA
Poole: 1-1, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Collado: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB
Silverio: 2-5, 1 RBI
Casanova: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Malone: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.50 ERA
Krise: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
Thompson: 4.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
Gracia: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 13.50 ERA

Even though he has the option of playing third base, I've thought from the beginning that it was a fallback option in case other scenarios didn't pan out. In the event that everyone were healthy, you have to marvel at the thought of a Kotchman-Kendrick-Wood-McPherson (or other slugging star) infield.
