Regarding Jeff Mathis, it is uncanny that despite batting .234 for the year, over the last 10 games he's turned it up a notch hitting .303. Similar improvements can be observed with Brandon Wood and Kendry Morales.

I've wondered if these improvements are due to normal maturation, mindful knowledge that we are approaching a "natural" time for a callup, or the fact that the best of the opponents' pitchers have already been promoted to the parent clubs by now.

In the case of Mathis, I find it curious that a player who was previously so highly touted offensively has appeared so mediocre in AAA. Maybe motivation is an issue, an issue not to be overlooked when discussing Joe Saunders' recent lapses. As I recall, Mike Napoli wasn't setting the world on fire when he was first called up last year.

The speculation hitherto has been that Mathis is simply a victim of Young Catcher Collapse. As catchers advance through the system, they sometimes fall apart offensively and never get it together. Mathis is still young enough that he might be able to turn that around, but there seems to be a growing cloud around him, particularly among statheads, as for instance his comment at BPro:

The Angels expected Mathis to be their catcher by now, and gave him every opportunity last April to make the job his own. It's hard to see why they wouldn't rather have him in, say, Seattle. Although he's a smooth receiver, he's not a great arm behind the plate, and his track record as a hitter is just so much Salt Lake froth. Although young, he's just not going to develop into anything more than a nice reserve.

Baseball America hadn't given up on him, rating him the system's seventh best prospect to start the year. Paul LoDuca stories are rare; LoDuca didn't become a regular until age 29, partly due to his being blocked by other, frankly inferior catchers. At 24, Mathis has some time but not a lot.
