Pickoff Moves
No, It Was Definitely Grittle
More Friday morning quarterbacking of yesterday's humiliation:Padres fans have to appreciate a questionable strategic decision by Grady Little in the decisive ninth inning. Josh Bard was in the cleanup spot because of his proficiency against left-handed pitching. However, after Adrian Gonzalez's double, Little opted to walk Bard - who has a miserable .580 OPS against righties this year and hasn't been able to catch up with good fastballs - to bring up Mike Cameron. Ostensibly, this move would set up a force play at the plate, but when Cameron puts the ball in play, it's usually in the air and loading the bases just put more pressure on Little's pitcher. Chances are that going after Bard would have yielded an out and changed the shape of the inning significantly.
Beware The Man With Only Juan Plan
Ugh:Even though he was held out of the lineup for only the second time this season, Juan Pierre said he wasn't about to modify his hitting style to avoid the rash of fly balls and quick-out at-bats that have recently plagued him."I just take the same approach in my drills every day," Pierre said before the Dodgers played the San Diego Padres on Thursday night at Petco Park. "I haven't changed or worked any different."
Roster Notes
- Perhaps with Chone Figgins' long slump after rejoining the club still fairly close in the rearview mirror, Maicer Izturis' rehab assignment has been extended and changed to Salt Lake.
- The Giants have placed Russ Ortiz on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm.
- Rich Harden is throwing from a mound, halfway, and might go all the way up later in the week.
