Roster Notes

Wow, did you catch the recent Win Shares update? Vlad AND Orlando leading all the majors one-two in production.

And look how much of that is OC's fielding. No one else is even close in fielding win shares.

No, I didn't, but thanks for that link. What blows me away is how far apart all the major metrics are on OCab; by the latest published UZR, he's near the bottom of the pack. David Pinto's probabilistic model of range has him almost exactly middle of the pack (though that was last year's data). His 2007 Rate2 is 115, which has to rank him as one of the top shortstops in the league; by contrast, Derek Jeter, who is always accused of being overrated but lately has come out shining in some of the newer fielding metrics, has a 110 score. Khalil Green has a 112 score. Rafael Furcal also has a 115 score.

By Fielding Win Shares, OCab is knocking the rest of them on their rears. It's just amazing how wildly disparate all the numbers are.

It's also possible that Win Shares is having small sample size problems. From what I recall, James warned against trying to calculate win shares on too small a sample size.

I'm missing O Cabrera in those UZR numbers...the only Cabrera cited is Miguel. It's difficult for me to see how Orlando could be toward the bottom in UZR, since he's league leader in ZR.

As for PMR, those are last year's numbers, and Cabrera wasn't playing in 2006 (by his own admission, as well) as he is this season.

So unless I'm missing something, are the major metrics all that far apart? I have yet to see 2007 data on OC for UZR and PMR.

Here's the complete list. Orlando's not near the bottom of this list (33), but he's well behind Jeter (43), Khalil Greene (39), and even Omar Vizquel (37).

Aren't you looking at the wrong column? Isn't "G" for complete games played? Shouldn't you be sorting by "runs_total"? In that case, you find OC at 4 and Jeter at -7. That seems reasonable. With that you get a list with names like Sizemore, Ellis, Crede, Willits and Kotchman near the top. And names like Kent, Drew, Burrell, Jeter and Figgins near the bottom.

By that column, Orlando is well within the top 10% of all MLB players, and the top 15% of MLB shortstops per UZR. Only Pena, Uribe and Lugo have slightly better marks in the AL.

That makes sense, right?
