Scoreboard Watching
- After losing 4-1 to the Cubs Friday, starter David Wells was burned by two homers in the sixth, one from Mike Fontenot and another by Alfonso Soriano. Padres starter Jake Peavy took umbrage when he felt Soriano showed Wells up running the basepaths:
“I didn't appreciate that. Just play the game,” Peavy said. “They pay him $136 million to hit home runs. They don't pay him to be a circus act on the field. If I think a player shows me up like that, I like the next guy to take one in the stinkin' ribs. That way, his teammate will let him know about it, (he) will tell him, 'Hey, you'd better run the bases.'
Today, Chris Young narrowly missed Derrek Lee's head, and this resulted:“Respect the game. That's the way it used to be. When you were growing up, did you see anybody act like that? Now it's accepted.”
- The Cards got moiderized yesterday, so they're making up for it today with a 10-run fifth to make it 15-6; 13 men came to the plate, Scott Spiezio got hit by a pitch, and Chris Duncan had a grand slam to cap it. If they lose, the Angels' lead will return to five games over second-place Oakland. (Update: Oakland did lose; the final score is reflected above, written, unclearly, just after that big 10-run fifth.)
