Two Games

Lackey's Hiding Something: Royals 5, Angels 3

I have to disagree with the "Lackey pitches well but still loses" title of the MLB.com recap of today's game; generally, pitching well does not includes such self-destructive events as a wild pitch, or a balk with men on first and second. Blame this loss on Napoli's inability to hold the ball in his mitt if you must, but it should never have come close to that. Lackey looked awfully hittable, and like Colon and Weaver, you have to suspect an injury.

The Better Game: Dodgers 8, Diamondbacks 1

Brad Penny got to 10 victories, thanks to a late rally. I missed it completely and utterly; but the real crime was something Jon mentioned, namely Nomar's return to third so James Loney can replace him at first. Nomar's a good guy, but you can see his baseball career vanishing by inches.

One does not HAVE to suspect injury for LAckey - the balk and other inconsistencies seemed like a return of his old Hot-Head emotional outbursts of years gone by.

After a missed start and a cortisone shot, I think this one just meant a little more to John. 2 strikeouts in the 8th inning are not the work of a gimp.

I agree with Rev. I can't for certain say Lackey's not hiding something, but he looked as strong as he ever has. He just fell victim to the big inning the way he has for much of his career. I don't think he would have gone that long if he hadn't been healthy, and his velocity and movement were there.

I mean, sheesh, he gave up two hits and one walk over the last five innings. That doesn't scream injury to me, unless "hiding something" refers to something else.

Nomar's game isn't vanishing by inches--it's vanishing by about 350 feet x 15 HR.

I am holding out hope that he's just getting little sleep at home with newborn twins. I hope that's it...

Let me get this straight: Lackey goes 8 innings (throwing only 107 pitches despite giving up five runs, putting him in complete game territory), strikes out seven against only one walk, and we're supposed to think that he's injured because he (a) balked (since when do injuries cause balks?) and (b) threw a wild pitch, something he does on average 13 times per year? In fact, he's on pace for a career low in WPs. Sorry, Rob. Your pessimistic nature is seeing things that just aren't there.

i'd blame Lackey's early struggles last night on rust if anything.

However, he got a cortisone shot this week so something's hurting.

Could the Angels use Nomar at DH instead of Hilldebrand?

Emi -- I think they're planning on using Kendry Morales and are actively shopping Hillenbrand.
