Dodgers Hit The Brakes At The Break, Snap Losing Skid At 4: Dodgers 9, Marlins 3

Well, thank heavens for this game, because it would have been a pretty nasty weekend otherwise. The Dodgers had a four-game losing streak going into this one, and while such stuff doesn't necessarily mean anything in a race as tight as the NL West, you sure don't want to see the team slump like this headed into the second half.

Mark Hendrickson got the start and was effective through five, but the fact that the Dodgers had to call on him at all is worrisome; so was Matt Kemp's early hamstring strain, but as it happened, it worked out in the short term. His replacement, Andre Ethier, knocked a three-run jack in the bottom of the second to set the score 8-0, and thus did the Dodgers win.

With Greg Maddux's less-than-impressive start against the Braves, the Padres lost 5-4, and the Dodgers go into the break a game back of San Diego. There was some talk elsewhere that when the Padres led the division at the break, they eventually went on to win it. Here's their record in those years they did:

Season  W-L   Lead
===================
2006   48-40   2.0
2005   48-41   5.5
1998   57-31   5.5
1996   48-41   1.0
1984   49-34   5.0
Which is to say, the Padres have usually been crushing their competition in most years where they took a lead to the half.
