Just So You'll Know I'm Not Dead
- Gustavo Dominguez was sentenced to five years for illegally smuggling Cubanos.
- Ichiro! hit an inside-the-park home run along the way to a 5-4 AL victory against the NL. Word is, he's re-upped with the Mariners for five years @ $20M per.
Update: Best Closer In The AL West, J.J. Putz, came near to coughing up a three-run lead, giving up a two-run homer to Alfonso Soriano; the AL had to call in K-Rod to finish things off by getting Aaron Rowand to fly out. And lest you think I'm being overly partisan here, Frankie was terrible, walking the first two batters he faced to load the bases. (Yahoo box.)
- The Angels and Mets are both on the short list for upcoming All-Star games; the Times speculates the 2010 game might swing to Anaheim.
- Vlad Guerrero won the All-Star Game Home Run Derby, with 17 in the second round. He paused at one point to tape his hands, which started to crack during the contest; David Ortiz gave him one of his bats, for luck, or something.
- I may have to take back (some of) the things I've said about Bud Selig; he's opposed to Scott Boras's incredibly stupid idea to move the World Series to a neutral spot. Heck, he even thinks using the DH for the NL in the All-Star Game makes sense, too.

The D-Backs are way overdue for the All Star Game. I can't fathom why in the world the Mets would get one, especially since the Yankees are up next, and aren't they getting a new stadium for the Mets anyways?
Geez, has any new stadium gone longer than Chase Field without hosting a game? Nevermind the fact its a gazillion degrees here in July - the game must come to Phoenix!

Dodger Stadium, for one, which hosted its last ASG in 1980, if memory serves.
Maybe they can lobby for Phoenix to host an ASG in winter...

The whole bat thing during the Derby was planned between Vlad and Ortiz. It was one of Vlad's own bats that Ortiz gave him.

Frankie did walk two, but I thought the first should have been a strikeout, as the 1B ump thought the batter checked his swing on 3-2. I thought it was a poor call, but Fox had no good replays on it. The next walk stunk, but one good thing about Frankie is that he didn't (and doesn't) let such things get him down.
