News
- Delwyn Young made this week's Prospect Hot Sheet:
It's hard not to root for Young, a draft-and-follow from 2002, who's been passed on the organizational depth chart by hitters like Matt Kemp, James Loney, Tony Abreu and Andy LaRoche. Young hit .483/.516/.828 last week with a league-leading 14 hits, seven doubles and eight extra-base hits. The switch-hitter, who turned 25 Saturday, took over the PCL lead with his 31st double on Friday.
- MILB.com once more has their weekly wrapup post published.
- No Angel or Dodger player was named Pitcher of the Week.
- Gordon Gronkowski's stellar week at Orem got him named Offensive Player of the Week in the Pioneer League.
Scores
Brown: 2-5, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wood: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Porter: 2-5, 1 K
Eylward: 2-3, 1 BB
Budde: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Smith, Ca: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Rouwenhorst: (W, 8-3), 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.47 ERA
It would be shorter to tell you the names of those players who didn't get two hits — Terry Evans, for one, who collected a golden sombrero in five at-bats, along with Curtis Pride, and 1-for-4 Gary Patchett — than it would to name everyone who did. Matt Brown (his 7th) and Brandon Wood (his 15th) both homered, both solo shots.
Jonathan Rouwenhorst pitched a quality start plus, seven innings of two-run ball. Jason Bulger struck out the side in the eighth, and Marcus Gwyn gave up a run but finished the game successfully.
Andrew in the comments yesterday questioned whether we had seen Chris Resop previously being good over a posited ten-game stretch before. I checked his game logs from last year, and sure enough, he gave up zero runs over the 12 games from June 15 through August 17, 2006. His big knock hitherto has been inconsistency, but he seems to be improving with the Bees so far this year.
One last thing about this game that's pretty scary: Wladimir Balentien hit his 20th homer, a day after the Netherlands Antilles' native's 23rd birthday. Also scary: he strikes out in 21% of his at-bats (66 in 308 prior to this game). (By comparison, Brandon Wood is whiffing in 26% of his AB's this year, but that's on its way down.) He may get a look in September in Seattle. You Have Been Warned.
Rodriguez, S: 0-3, 1 BB
Johnson: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Rodriguez, F: 7.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 3.75 ERA
Rodriguez, R: (BS, 3)(L, 0-6) (in relief), 0.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5.72 ERA
O'Day: 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
Ben Johnson homered in his first AA game batting out of the five hole and playing first base, a fourth inning shot that tied the game 1-1. The Travs got another one in seventh when Coby Smith cashed in Aaron Peel's leadoff double.
Fernando Rodriguez, Jr. started to tire in the bottom of the eighth. Rafael Rodriguez, brought in to relieve him, gave up a homer with one out and inherited runner Cliff Pennington at second, and took the loss without making any outs himself. Darren O'Day made the final out of the game.
Renz: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Remole: 2-5
Toussaint: 2-4, 1 RBI
Ortega: (L, 4-8), 5.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 5 BB, 1 HR, 3.45 ERA
Lancaster's big four-run seventh put them over the top in this one. Anthony Ortega posted four zero frames before giving up three in the fifth and another in the sixth, though thanks to a Hainley Statia fielding error, two of those were unearned. Statia made up for it somewhat at the plate by going 4-for-5.
Jordan Renz homered and went 3-for-5 in the loss, one of several Quakes who had multi-hit games. Rancho had problems with stranding baserunners all night, leaving 11 total.
Trumbo: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Walker: 1-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Smith: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Phillips: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 K
Haynes: (W, 3-4), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2.95 ERA
Cook: (S, 5), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.94 ERA
Both sides traded goose eggs for five frames until the Kernels finally broke through for three in the bottom of the sixth, chasing Kane County starter Henry Alberto Rodriguez after he allowed a walk to Mark Trumbo. This may have qualified as an example of a manager knowing and applying the Grabowski Principle, but if it was, it utterly failed, because after reliever John Herrera came in, Julio Perez singled. A wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Trumbo to score and Perez to reach third, and Brian Walker cashed him in, and ultimately scored himself on a wild throw by 3B Christian Vitters.
Stantrel Smith collected his fourth homer, a two-run jack in the eighth. Jeremy Haynes got the win in one of his better performances, his first seven-inning shutout of the season.
Brossman: 3-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Gronkowski: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Garcia: 0-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Moore: 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
Pippin: 2-5, 2 RBI
De Los Santos: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Jung: 0.2 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 9.00 ERA
Cabrera: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 3.00 ERA
Holland: (BS, 1), 1.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 11.12 ERA
Towns: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1.93 ERA
Gordon Gronkowski's on fire, and everybody wants to pull up a chair and sit a spell. But today, everybody was on fire, starting with Casper's big five-run first, which the Owlz immediately got back in a four-run second. The game was decided in the bottom of the ninth on Austin Rauch's solo homer off Jordan Towns, who took the loss.
Catcher Anel De Los Santos was a single away from the cycle, one of two players in the game to miss a cycle; the other was Casper's Jeffrey Cunningham, who missed it by a triple.
Navarro: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Loman: 2-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Norman: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Perez, D: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Armstrong: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 1.93 ERA
Flores: (BS, 1), 1.1 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 8.53 ERA
Rosario, An: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
21-year-old Seth Loman hit a grand slam in the seventh, but all that did was tie up the game. He helped finish the job in the ninth, when he followed up Efren Navarro's leadoff double with a single of his own to put men on the corners, but Navarro erased himself trying to steal home, 2-5-1. That advanced Loman to second, and Gregory Mann cashed him in with a walkoff single.
Small Sample Size Theater presents this factoid: five of Loman's nine hits have been for extra bases. He's hitting .333/.412/.700 so far, with three of those XBH going over the fence.
Lindsey: 1-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
LaRoche: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
McDougall: 2-4, 1 2B
Davis: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Wright: 1-1
Juarez: (W, 4-3), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 1 HR, 6.42 ERA
Fussell: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5.40 ERA
Wright: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 6.75 ERA
Nothing better than thumping the Giants' farm team. Andy LaRoche and John Lindsey both homered, Lindsey's a two-run shot in the sixth. Lindsey also drove in two more on a sac fly and a scoring groundout. Delwyn Young missed the cycle by a homer; his 32nd double leads the PCL, and he's now hitting .332.
William Juarez got the win despite a less-than-quality start.
Hu, C: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Concepcion: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Raglani: 2-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Megrew: 0-2, 1 K
Troncoso: 0-1
Dunlap: 0-1
Megrew: (W, 5-5), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 3 BB, 5.80 ERA
Troncoso: (H, 2), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1.96 ERA
Meloan: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.06 ERA
Anthony Raglani, whose power bat had disappeared in June, woke up on the second day of July and blasted two over the fence to carry his team past visiting Mobile. Starter Mike Megrew pitched five innings of two-run ball to get the win, and Jonathan Meloan closed it out.
Hoffmann: 3-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
De Jesus: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI

Santana: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K

Pfeiffer: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 4.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 2.81 ERA
Ramirez: (S, 8), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.41 ERA
Brown: 2-4, 1 K
Ortiz: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Gardner: (L, 1-1), 2.2 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 4.40 ERA

Even as he improves, he still is exhibiting one major flaw: an inability to get out lefties. But we have other tools in our BP for that. It'd simply be nice to have one RP specialist in Anaheim with a power curve to give certain sluggers another look.
