News

Tulsa hitting coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed during the Travs game; see below for details.

Scores

2007-07-22: Salt Lake 0, Sacramento 1 #
Murphy: 0-4, 2 K
Gorneault: 0-4, 1 K
Evans: 1-4, 3 K
Wilson: 1-3
Santana: (L, 0-1), 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 1.29 ERA
Santana pitched well and still lost on the road, perhaps an improvement. Terry Evans continued to scuffle, one strikeout shy of a golden sombrero.
2007-07-22: Tulsa 3, Arkansas 7 (Suspended)
Suspended in the ninth when Tulsa Drillers hitting coach Mike Coolbaugh was knocked unconscious by a line drive foul; play was suspended for nearly 30 minutes before he was sent to a nearby hospital, where he was pronouced dead. He is survived (sub. required) by his wife Mandy, and two young sons Joseph and Jacob; his wife is pregnant and due to deliver in October. (Also via the Tulsa World; a second story is now available on MiLB.com.)

Ironically enough, Coolbaugh technically shouldn't have been there, since he's an interim hitting coach; the regular hitting coach, Orlando Merced, resigned, and Coolbaugh took the position on July 3.

It was the second time this season someone with Tulsa was struck by a batted ball during a game against the Travs. On April 26, pitcher Jon Asahina was hit at Arkansas by a line drive near his left temple, fracturing his skull and rupturing his eardrum. He has since rejoined the team.

Before that, the Travs were busy clobbering the Drillers in more conventional ways as Freddy Sandoval hit a three-run homer. Nick Green allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innnings, a textbook quality start.

Sutton: 2-5, 2 2B, 2 K

Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 9.56 ERA
Somebody needs to explain to Tim Schoeninger that run support is usually not that generous in the Cal League. On the other hand, three of his runs were unearned thanks to a one-out fielding error by 3B Larry Infante. It didn't matter, as Ben Johnson hit a grand slam and Clifton Remole hit a three-run homer to more than make up the difference. Patrick Reilly also homered, a two-run shot in the fourth.

Somebody needs to explain to Tim Schoeninger that run support is usually not that generous in the Cal League

I'm curious about this site's tendency to introduce defensive lapses by calling out the pitcher first. It happens a lot in these capsules. "Someone needs to explain to that dopey struck motorist that there are drunk drivers in this world! Sheesh."

Interesting fact: Schoeninger has given up 2 ERs or fewer in his last three starts, over which time he's compiled 21 Ks.

Another interesting fact: Though it appears Santana pitched well, his control problems were still glaringly evident. Three walks, one HR, and only 50 of his 90 pitches were strikes. I'm glad he wasn't pitching in the Dome last night.

It is also a fact, Andrew, that Schoeninger has an absurdly high 6.31 ERA, high, even, by Cal League standards. He's 4-1 in five starts, so he's either cratered (as in his July 6 start at High Desert, a well-known launching pad) or been been bailed out by his offense (his July 1 start at Lancaster with 5 ER). He's likely not a bad pitcher, and yes, sample size issues apply, but given that he was facing younger competition at lower levels, I fully expected him to crash a bit once he moved up.

As for Santana, 90 pitches, and 50 strikes. Ouch.

Also: there are strong arguments against being especially worried about fielding errors when looking at a pitcher's performance.

Lordy but I do love these minor league notes. That sounds strange in light of the Coolbaugh tragedy so I'll add that we should finally follow Vin's advice and get some helmets on those guys, their egos be damned.

Off-topic: one of the many things I love about this blog is Rob's criticism of Scott Boras aka Beelzebub.

But I don't know if Rob as addressed this: http://tinyurl.com/2crc8t

If you're too lazy to click, as I often am, Boras has his own cadre of coaches who train his clients. The teams that employ said clients are, shall we say, less than pleased.

Interesting, Clayton. I utterly disagree with the premiss they use there, that Boras's coaches are necessarily at odds with the team's; both have an interest in improved performance, regardless.
