Rangers Send Kenny Lofton To Cleveland For C Max Ramirez
Ramirez was signed as an undrafted free agent from Venezuela by the Braves in 2002. He's currently hitting .303/.418/.505 with 12 homers at high-A Kinston. Rotoworld says "It's doubtful that he has a future as a regular catcher in the majors" but his bat could play at third or first, and he's got at least the talent to make it as a bench player.
Update: Helene Elliott at the Times seems to be fanning the flames of the easily ignited, as are Mike DiGiovanna and Ben Bolch. The latter duo's piece, "Teixeira or bust at deadline?", would seem to indicate that the Angels are hell-bent for the Rangers' first baseman, having exhausted the possibilities of Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko. The Rangers allegedly want Casey Kotchman, guaranteed, with two from column B being some mix of Ervin Santana (though not so much now that he's been demoted to Salt Lake), Joe Saunders, Nick Adenhart, Nathan Haynes, and Reggie Willits.
An in-division trade simply isn't going to happen, not after the Rangers got burned sending Chris Young to the Padres for only a handful of appearances by Adam Eaton. (In case you forgot, Young leads the NL in ERA and has been in the top five most of the year.) So the Rangers are in a bit of a spot: they have to be seen making a kick-ass trade, or no trade at all. The downside risk for Texas of trading in-division is great; and when have you ever seen Stoneman trade two highly-ranked young players in one deal? This ain't happening, kids.
