The Santana Who Wasn't There

Curtis Zupke writes that the Angels think Ervin Santana's game Sunday was a good one:
"The word we got was that if Ervin brought that stuff last night to a major-league game, he would have success, and that's encouraging for the fact that it's not like he was throwing against Triple-A hitters," Manager Mike Scioscia said.

"He was really executing his pitches. It was more what he did than the competition."

...

"He definitely stepped forward, and it's about getting him on that road of consistency that will get him into a major-league rotation," Scioscia said. "The talent is still there for him to re-emerge."

Certainly that's true, but as commenter Andrew mentioned in the comments, Santana also threw a lot of pitches out of the strike zone (50 of 90). That certainly makes it sound like the opposite of what Scioscia said.

The Chronicler has a good summary of what the Angels can hope to do now that the team has two starters downed to ineffectiveness. I'm hoping for a working Ervin Santana, but I have a bad feeling he won't reemerge until next year at least.
