U.S.S. Mariner: First Blogger Ever Listened To By A Pitcher?

Stephen Nelson dropped me a line to say that the U.S.S. Mariner's open letter to pitching coach Rafael Chaves actually got to its intended recipient, i.e., Chaves and then Felix Hernandez. King Felix, it seems, was offering up all but exclusively fastballs in the first inning, and as a result was giving up a very hittable .380/.426/.560 line. Their advice: throw something else, because "[h]e didn’t have fastball command in Everett, Wisconsin, Inland Empire, San Antonio, or Tacoma, and he doesn’t have it in Seattle." It seems to have worked, because (a) it got picked up on the Seattle Times blog, and (b) Hernandez blanked the A's 4-0, with the A's former ace Rich Harden failing to last even three innings.

Now they're getting all cocky and thinking about taking the division. If the Angels keep playing like they have lately, it's within sight.

Nitpicky: it was the Seattle Times blog of Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker.

Baker also made it the feature of his game story: M's fans lend Felix helping hand in victory over A's
