News
- Tardy, but since I frequently use this space of late to drop in notes about injuries, Randy Wolf gets supposedly bad news about his injured left hip requiring at least another month to repair, but seriously, when we already knew that he would be out indefinitely, is "done for the season" really worse?
- I missed this earlier, but Dodgers' minor league hitting coordinator Bill Robinson died Sunday while visiting AAA Las Vegas, cause unknown; he was found dead in his hotel room. He was 64.
- Buried in the AP recap of today's Angels game is the note that Bartolo Colon threw on flat ground for the first time since he hit the DL on July 24. The Angels have no timetable for him to throww off a mound.
- The Angels signed
Derrick Thomas, formerly with Utah Valley State, near Orem.
Thomas was an undrafted free agent.
He now lives in Alpine and has been working construction when UVSC assistant coach Eric Madsen told Thomas of the Owlz need for another catcher and helped get the team hooked up with Thomas.
"I was just working asphalt in Salt Lake and working out when I could. I'd been coaching and playing in a summer league when I had time," Thomas said. "Like Crash Davis (Bull Durham) said, 'it beats working at Sears.' "
- The Angels won 2007 MLN Farm System of the Year by Minor League News.

Three runs separated the winner from the loser in this one, and all of them crossed the plate thanks to Nick Gorneault's three-run homer, leaving him a double short of the cycle.
Brandon Wood didn't waste any time after his demotion, driving in a pair and walking twice besides. Terry Evans snapped a three-game 0-fer slump and had his second three-hit game of the month. Catcher Bobby Wilson also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Kasey Olenberger ended a three-game losing streak despite giving up five runs, all earned. Alex Serrano got his first save in over a month in the absence of Marcus Gwyn, now on the big club.

Lindsey: 2-4, 2 HR, 5 RBI
LaRoche: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Hoorelbeke: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.27 ERA
At the rate Andy LaRoche had been going, it was kind of a disappointment not to see a homer on his line... anyway, a rout by Las Vegas, powered in good part by John Lindsey, who blasted two out of the yard, a two-run jack in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth, his 15th and 16th respectively. Blocked by James Loney and of dubious value to any major league team because of his age, he looks for the world like a AAAA player.
Eric Cyr got the win; Wesley Wright suffered another rocky outing, and I wonder just how many more of these he'll get before they send him back down to Jacksonville.

Felix: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 5.54 ERA
Lucas May collected his 22nd homer of the year, a solo shot, in a game that really became a rout only after a big four-run eighth.
