Liriano: (L, 4-12), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5.75 ERA
It was the Brandon Wood and Nick Gorneault shows, as all four Bees runs came off homers by those two guys. Wood's dinger was his first since August 6, and his first extra-base hit since August 12. Bobby Wilson has been lighting it up in August, hitting .347/.407/.633 with a pair of jacks; he went 2-for-4 yesterday.

Rich Thompson gave up an earned run in the ninth, only his fifth since July 1. Over that span, he's had a 1.93 ERA, 9.74 K/9, 6.25 K/BB, and a 0.81 WHIP. Dude is due for a callup.

It's interesting that a lot of people aren't high on Rich Thompson. He's doing well in Triple-A despite being relatively young. Baseball Prospectus was fairly dismissive at the beginning of the year, and a lot of sites were down on him right before the Futures game.

He definitely deserves a call-up. I could see him playing a key role in the pen. I don't necessarily know if he's closer material (he's not posting insane K/9 rates like Frankie did back in the day) but having him in middle relief would be nice.

I don't the get the sense that folks are not high on Thompson. I called Angels Talk (a rarity, something I might do once every year or two) last week to ask specifically about Thompson, and Terry Smith said that Scioscia has been raving about the kid all year -- in short that he won't stop talking about him. The one hurdle is that he isn't on the 40-man, so someone will have to be taken off to replace him.

Anytime a 40-man roster issue comes up, I wonder why Greg Jones is taking up a spot. He's been a good organizational soldier, but he has no future except as a last man in the 'pen...by all appearances, Marcus Gwyn and Thompson are both at least his equal. Jason Bulger (also not on the 40-man) is posting some impressive K-rates himself, and I have a hard time believing that he's appreciably worse than Jones.
