Minor League Scorebook
News
Chris Pettit of the Angels made Kevin Goldstein's list of top corner outfielders in the minors:Last June, 581 players were drafted before Chris Pettit. It made sense at the time--Pettit could hit, but he was right-handed and not especially big or strong or fast, so there was little to project on. As it turns out, maybe not that much projection was needed. He put up some big numbers at Cedar Rapids in the first half of the season, but didn’t really get much attention until the scouts started to confirm what the numbers were already saying: this guy can really hit. He’s also a better athlete than people anticipated, with 18 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 120 games. It’s hard to figure out what he’s going to be, but one scout called him a right-handed Rusty Greer, which makes some sense.
Scores
A nice day for both teams' system, as most of their minor league affiliates won...

Tommy Murphy scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the top of the ninth, with Jason Bulger getting the in in relief. Matt Brown hit a two-run jack in the sixth (his 17th of the season), and Terry Evans had his first multi-hit game since August 15. Notably absent from the lineup: Juan Rivera.

Morrissey: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 2-5
Collins: 4-4, 1 2B
Fuller: 2-4, 1 RBI
Coon: 3-3, 3 RBI
Gonzalez, M: 7.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 2.99 ERA
Edwards: (BS, 5)(L, 4-4) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.21 ERA
A nice game for Miguel Gonzalez, who has otherwise posted uninteresting numbers, particularly his pedestrian 4.75 K/9 as a starter. Wichita won the game in the bottom of the tenth on Kila Kaaihue's solo homer off reliever Bill Edwards. Michael Collins (4-for-4) and Brad Coon (3-for-3 with 3 RBIs) both had perfect days at the plate.

Infante: 2-4, 1 2B
Marek: (W, 8-9), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 4.61 ERA
Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.73 ERA
I get the impression that Stephen Marek will continue to be on the Angels' radar, but mainly because of decreased depth in starting pitching due to promotions rather than any particular competence on his part. Nevertheless, he's won three of his last four starts and posted quality starts in those victories. Unfortunately, he's only had ten quality starts out of 23 tries, which is hardly what you'd hope for. And speaking of troubled pitchers, Jose Arredondo pitched a perfect ninth, marking his third straight scoreless game.

I assume Aaron Peel is rehabbing here; he went 2-for-4 and drove in an RBI batting fourth. Peel lead off the bottom of the third with a single, part of a big five-run inning that capped scoring for the Quakes.
