Osama Bin Laden Wants Your Diet Pepsi (Or Other Soft Drink) Cap

This story about fans being told that face painting is not allowed at Yankee Stadium (h/t BTF) reminded me of an incident that has bothered me all year: if you buy a Diet Pepsi at the field level barbecues at Angel Stadium, the friendly concessionaire on the other side of the counter will insist on taking off the cap and refuse to give it to you, regardless of whether you have to go up to the tippy-top of the stadium and therefore might have a high chance of spillage. Yet, the guys hawking drinks in the stands will sell you the exact same bottle with the cap on. The reason given for not allowing people to have those terrorist-inducing caps: Homeland Security said so. The hell? Do these clowns really busy themselves thinking about this crap? And if so, why are we paying them to just make our lives stupidly lamer in petty, everyday ways?

You know, Democrats, I'm all over the "balancing the budget" idea as long as you guys agree first that there's a hell of a lot of deadwood in the government that could be profitably chopped free. That starts with the Department of Homeland Security. DHS isn't about security so much as it is about turning the country into a bunch of sheep willing to take off their damn shoes at the airport because of secret rules that nobody can see. What kind of a free country has secret laws?

Tomko = Bombko: Giants 4, Dodgers 2

By the time I got to this one, it was all over. I was going to make a crack about the Giants being the worst offense in the division, but in fact they're only the second-worst, thanks to a more-or-less equally bad Diamondbacks offense. The Snakes are starting to remind me some of the 2003 Dodgers that way: all pitching, no bats.

The Dodgers loaded the bases in three innings and scored two runs out of it. Gah. At least Barry Bonds will get to fold his circus tent and take that show down the road to San Diego, where they're dreading the prospect of making the call for 756.

Milestones, And The Small Sample Size Police: Padres 11, Diamondbacks 0

Numerical illiteracy abounds; Morgan Ensberg has one good game, so now there are bandwagoneers who think he's the solution to anybody's problem? He's announced to the pitchers his hitting approach for the rest of the season:
Ensberg said he looked back at his good times and bad times in Houston. "I decided I was most successful when I was aggressive and when I swung as hard as I could. I came here with the idea that if I see the ball, I'm going to absolutely let it fly. If not, I'm going to go down in a huge ball of flames."
Well, the Pads just released a player with that very profile, and I see he has yet to catch on anywhere else, either.

Meantime, Jake "Cy Young" Peavy collected his 1,000th career strikeout on a night where he finished seven innings with ten, and is second in franchise history with 1,004, after Andy Benes (1,036).

Remember, of the two runs the Dodgers "scored," one was on a bases-loaded walk. Potent offense, my ass.

I agree with you on the DHS, but the Pepsi cap thing may have more to do with player safety. I know that at the Staples Center they do the same thing during Kings games for bottled water, but the given reason is that they don't want folks throwing the bottle caps on the ice. The caps are white and would be difficult to see on the ice surface. Maybe they are afraid someone will poke out someone's eye with a bottle cap.

I understand that... but if they say stuff like that as a reason for it, it's just lame. OTOH, what's preventing someone in the upper deck from hurling one onto the field?

What's stupid about the Pepsi cap thing is that it isn't enforced throughout the stadium. As Rob points out, you can buy the exact same bottle with the exact same cap elsewhere in the stadium, and then take that bottle and cap wherever you please within the stadium. It's completely irrational. They'll even let you bring in your own outside bottle, I believe (at least they do for water; not sure about sodas), complete with cap.
