Cesar Izturis Botches One In Chicago: Cubs 13, Pirates 8
Checking in on Cesar Izturis post-Dodgers career: traded to the Cubs as part of the Greg Maddux dump (it was rumored Maddux desperately wanted off a moribund Cubs team), he hit .233/.282/.260 in the balance of his 2006, but has improved slightly after a midseason trade to Pittsburgh with a .267/.308/.297 line in 101 AB. His fielding declined for the Cubs in the first half of 2007 according to Baseball Prospectus, with a 91 Rate2. This year, he's got a 116 Rate2 with Pittsburgh, but he threw away a big one today in the second inning of today's Pirates/Cubs contest, allowing Derrek Lee to score from second. Izturis made up for it by tripling in a run in the third and later scored a run on a bunt single, but got pulled in the fourth for Matt Kata when he reported irritation in his right elbow. The Cubs are presently up 13-7 over the Pirates, and if they win, they'll be two games over the Brewers in the NL Central with Milwaukee facing Tim Hudson and needing a win.
Update: The Pirates got one more on a solo homer by Xavier Nady, but that was it. Aramis Ramirez blasted two three-run homers, marking the fourth time in his career he's driven in six or more runs in one game. Cubs 13, Pirates 8, final.
Update 2: Dag Nabbit at BTF snarkily notes that this guarantees the NL Central winner will not have a losing record, as the Cubbies crawl to an 81-73 record.
