- Here's more from the Register
about UCI head coach Dave Serrano moving over to CSUF:
"I always thought that if ever George left – and I never wanted to see that happen – but if he did, my goal was to have Dave Serrano as the next coach," Titans athletic director Brian Quinn said today. "That was always my hope.
"I believe that the best person to keep what George had going here was Dave. I hate losing George and I don't know if you can ever replace him, but I thought Dave would be the best person to bring in here."
- Kevin Goldstein looks at this year's disappointments in AL farm systems, and the Angels have some:
Right-hander Nick Adenhart looked to be moving up to elite status after putting up a 0.80 ERA in his first five starts at Double-A Arkansas, but he struggled with consistency from there on out, with a 4.45 mark the rest of the way. While there’s been no official word, there have been questions as to if he was really entirely healthy at the end of the year.
Almost as Disappointing: Fireballing righty Stephen Marek’s inability to develop a usable breaking ball led to a 4.30 ERA in High-A, and more troubling, a significantly lower strikeout rate. Tool-laden infielder P.J. Phillips hit 13 home runs and stole 34 bases in 38 attempts at Low-A Cedar Rapids, but there’s little hope for him unless he can make some massive improvements in his plate discipline after whiffing 154 times while drawing just 15 walks.

The River Cats stayed alive in the PCL postseason by beating the snot out of Henry Bonilla, despite being themselves outhit 10-9. Tommy Murphy homered in the loss, and Brandon Wood had three hits; he's hitting .500 in the postseason so far.
The best-of-five series continues tonight in Sacramento.

Despite winning 15 of their last 19 regular season games, the Kernels are done for the year following their second loss in the best-of-three first round of the Midwest League's postseason. The Kernels got an early 1-0 lead in the first on Ryan Mount's leadoff triple followed by Peter Bourjos' RBI single, and then two more in the third on a double by Mount, another RBI single by Bourjos, and a dramatic steal of home by Bourjos, part of a double steal with Wilberto Ortiz taking second.
Unfortunately, things quickly went south for the Kernels, who gave up three runs in the third, one of them on a bases-loaded balk by starter Sean O'Sullivan, who got yanked after four. Clinton took a 4-3 lead in the fourth; the Kernels tied in the top of the sixth on three consecutive singles by Mark Trumbo, Hank Conger, and Abel Nieves, but the Lumber Kings took the lead for good in the sixth with a Marcus Lemon leadoff triple and K.C. Herren's RBI single.
Gronkowski: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Moore: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 K
Giovanatto: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K

Holland: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.20 ERA
Andrew Romine hit for the cycle and drove in a career-high five runs in the last regular season meeting of the Angels and Dodgers' Pioneer League affiliates, helping the Owlz to salvage a win from the three-game road set. Donato Giovanatto also homered, a leadoff shot in the ninth. Esmerlin Jimenez helped himself to his fifth win of the season, his second consecutive victory, but only his fifth quality start of the year. Jimenez and relievers Tremayne Holland and Leonardo Calderon five-hit the Raptors.
Starter Rodney Brantley took the loss for Ogden, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out two over two innings of work.
The Pioneer League postseason begins Saturday, with Wild Card winners Orem going up against Idaho Falls.
Justis: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Bell: 1-4, 1 K
Pedroza: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 K

Lake Elsinore simply crushed the 66ers in the final game of the first round Cal League postseason, scoring single runs in the second through fourth, and then putting up a big three-spot in the fifth. Starter Cody White lasted only four innings, while Storm starter Steve Garrison pitched seven innings of shutout ball, striking out eight and giving up only five hits; no Inland Empire baserunner even made it to third.
Dalton: 2-3, 1 2B
Brantley: (L, 2-2), 2.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.08 ERA

"A 19th-round pick out of Loyola Marymount last June, outfielder Chris Pettit was leading the Midwest League in hitting at .346/.429/.579 when the Angels promoted him to the California League at the All-Star break. He’s not especially big or toolsy, but after putting up a .309/.395/.502 line at High-A Rancho Cucamonga, scouts are convinced that the kid can hit.
"Honorable Mention: Converted outfielder Warner Madrigal thrived in his first full season on the mound, compiling 20 saves at Low-A Cedar Rapids to go along with a 2.07 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 65 innings. He was especially sharp in the second half, touching 98 mph with his fastball and showing a hard, biting slider to allow just two earned runs in his last 27 games (0.57 ERA) while limiting opposing hitters to a .127 batting average. Australian righty Rich Thompson never developed as a starter, but he came alive in a bullpen role with a 2.01 ERA across three levels and 85 strikeouts in 76 innings. With an above-average fastball and even better curve, Thompson has reached the majors and should stay there for years to come."
