Wells, Wells, Wells, What Have We Here? Dodgers 6, Giants 2
I listened to this game while we were out running errands yesterday, and so missed the big three-run ninth as well as the three-run first, i.e., the interesting bits. What killed me afterwards was reading this bit in the AP recap notes:
Dodgers 1B Nomar Garciaparra was originally going to start Saturday but Little changed his mind to keep James Loney, who hit two home runs on Friday night, in the lineup. Why was he even thinking about playing Nomar? Heck, why, with rosters expanded, is Shea Hillenbrand playing third ahead of Andy LaRoche? It was an especially dubious decision considering Hillenbrand's notorious defense at third — and yes, he proved it by throwing one away. Grady's not completely stupid, but there are times when he vexes me sorely.
David Wells was perfect through five, and gave up two runs over six innings to get his seventh win of the year. That's his second straight victory in a Dodger uniform in two starts. Meanwhile, Brett Tomko has been effective for San Diego with a 2.25 ERA in two relief appearances lasting a total of four innings. You get what you can out of guys like these.
