Getting The Bugs Out: Indians 2, Yankees 1 (11 Innings)

Yahoo Box

Bottom 8th: After Andy Pettite threw probably his best game of the year, the Tribe trailed 1-0 (the only run was Melky Cabrera's third inning solo homer) going into the bottom of the 7th with two outs to go. Joba Chamberlain got the two remaining outs, but upon returning for the bottom of the 8th, got sprayed with bug repellent for the enormous numbers of gnat-like bugs (the TBS announcers called them Canadian soldiers). It didn't work: Chamberlain was clearly rattled by the bugs, his neck looking like a No-Pest Strip. He gave up a four-pitch leadoff walk and two wild pitches, one scoring, to tie up the game. Tied, 1-1.

Top 9th: Fausto Carmona, presently off the hook for a loss, gets the first two batters easily but then Bobby Abreu legs out an infield single as Jhonny Peralta isn't quite able to get the ball to Ryan Garko quickly enough. A-Rod, who has no hits in the series, comes to the plate; the crowd roars to life with each pitch. Abreu steals second on a 1-2 pitch with a high throw from Victor Martinez.

A-Rod whiffs. The crowd goes mad.

Bottom 10th: Rivera loads the bases, one of those (Grady Sizemore) reaching on a wild pitch strikeout. He strikes out Peralta to end the frame. Tied, 1-1.

Bottom 11th: Kenny Lofton reaches on a four-pitch leadoff walk off Luis Vizcaino. Cleveland eventually loads the bases on a Franklin Gutierrez single and an intentional walk to Grady Sizemore, and Travis Hafner hits a liner straight over the infield, Kenny Lofton scoring the winning run. 2-1 Cleveland, and the Tribe goes up 2-0 in the series.
