UZR's Best And Worst

Those heroes and villains relevant to this blog:

Pos Player UZR Comments
=============================================================
1B Kotchman +20 Best listed in either league
Sexson -11 Worst listed in either league
2B Kent -23 Worst listed in either league
SS Tulowitzki +20
    Vizquel +16 What the ...??
Eckstein -10 Age taking its toll?
Jeter -27 Worst shortstop in the league
3B Figgins -11 Sigh
Atkins -23 Apparently not there for his glove
LF Soriano +16 Lousy 2B, great LF
Holliday +13 All this and fielding, too
    Ibanez -30
CF Matthews -11 I don't believe it -- he's mediocre
Suzuki -14 Pretty sure I don't believe this, either
RF Guillen -21

That means the Mariners were easily putting out the most inept defensive outfield in the division, and possibly the league. I have my beef with the Ichiro rating, because he seems to me to get to a lot of balls.

This seems almost worthless. I don't agree with many of these ratings. Isn't it skewed by whether a team has many ground ball pitchers as opposed to fly ball pitchers or vice versa? As an example, I don't believe that Rowand and Sizemore have the most range in their respective leagues, though they are good fielders.

UZR seems to have a lot of respect in the saber-world, but as they say, even the best advanced fielding metrics are iffy. There are people who sniff at Rate2.

Just as you think Ichiro covers a lot more ground than these numbers show, so it appears to me that GMJr. does likewise, particularly going backwards towards the wall.

I've never thought GMJ wasn't fast... it's that he can take enough bad routes and misplay enough balls to make degrade his defense to merely average despite the occasionally spectacular catch.
