Mariners Trade Adam Jones For Erik Bedard
Both the Baltimore Sun and Seattle Times report Adam Jones is headed to the O's for Erik Bedard. USS Mariner grouses
It is confusing and distressing to witness a team that claims to be interested in fielding a competitive team over the long term trade a player of Jones’ talent and value, along what we reasonably expect to be highly valuable pieces, to the Orioles for a pitcher determined to test free agency at the end of his contract. And there, in a nutshell, you understand the problem with this deal. More: "Two great pitchers and mediocre everything else is not a formula for consistent success."

"Two great pitchers and mediocre everything else is not a formula for consistent success." As long as they aren't HOF-great, i suppose so, but the Dodgers of the mid-1960's did OK.
Bedard/Hernandez won't make anyone forget Koufax/Drysdale though. Suffering through the Angels of the mid-1970's, i would have loved to have seen how much further they could have gone if they just had a "mediocre everything else" to go along with Ryan and Tanana.
This was the worst move by a division rival this winter - hands down. A bad thing for the M's.

I don't see why this is such a bad thing for the Ms. Bedard is a stud. Silva is a tremendous upgrade from WTE. They scored enough runs; with a solid pen, they should be better than last year.
i see it as perhaps a short term gain - for a guy coming off a career year who sounds intent on testing FA.
Losing Adam Jones is a long term loss - it's exactly the oppposite of what Beane has done this winter. It's a 'win now' mentality that i don't think will pay off.

jjackflash -- Please to note the "pitcher determined to test free agency at the end of his contract" should also be followed by a note that Bedard's contract expires at the end of 2008. This is a terrible move by the Mariners, especially post-2008, unless they can convince him to stay. Jones wasn't going to be arbitration-eligible for another three years.
Checking his Rotoworld page with his contract status on it, he's arbitration eligible in 2008 and 2009, so you're right about the duration. Still think I'd rather have Jones, though.
