Minor League Scorebook
News
- The Angels released 1B/DH Jesse Hoorelbeke from the Texas League AA Arkansas Travelers' roster, and signed RHP Dan Denham as a starter. The Angels signed Hoorelbeke in the 2007/8 offseason as a minor league free agent; he appeared in four games, going 2-for-12. Hoorelbeke originally signed with the Dodgers in 2002 as a non-drafted free agent, getting as high as AA Jacksonville in 2004. He later played in the Mariners and Cubs' system, and in the independent Northern and Atlantic leagues.
Denham is a former first-round pick (17th overall) by the Cleveland Indians in the 2001 draft, and had pitched as high as the AAA level with that organization; he also spent time in the organizations of Oakland and Cincinnati.
- Sort of a meta note, I did manage to update the Angels half of
the watchlist based on the Baseball America 2008 Prospect
Handbook, which means the following changes:
- New for 2008: Anel De Los Santos, Jonathan Bachanov, Robert Fish, Clayton Fuller, Andrew Romine, Rich Thompson.
- Ejected by Tony Reagins, for cause or not: Nick Gorneault, Dallas McPherson, Warner Madrigal (oops), Tommy Murphy, Chris Resop.
- Promoted but I'm keeping a watchlist entry for these guys anyway in case they need to go back for a rehab or something: Kendry Morales, Dustin Moseley, Darren O'Day, Jeff Mathis.
- Falling off the list by BA's lights, though I will keep these guys around for auld lang syne sake: Trevor Bell, Gustavo Espinoza (at some point you have to cut your losses, but I may keep him around in case he rematerializes), Tommy Mendoza, Phil Siebel.
- I heard from Jason Ratliff at MILB.com today about the story links on box scores; apparently, they're going to start allowing teams to write their own stories, and those will soon go live (within the next week). So, yay.
- Jon notes that Anthony Raglani has retired from baseball, and Cory Dunlap was suspended for failing to show up in shape for spring.
"Cory didn't follow the organization's policy," Watson added, "I am undecided on his return."
Update: In that same link from Jon, an Indiana Gazette interview in which Raglani claims the team mislead him about where he would be playing — Raglani was told he would be in AAA Las Vegas, but was later told to report to AA Jacksonville for the third straight year. He retired rather than reporting, but is hoping for a release.

Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.25 ERA
New day, new record: Now it's 8-0, and as with every victory in this improbable string, it's setting a franchise record. Shane Loux pitched seven innings of scoreless ball to bring his record to 2-0, helped out by an offense that built a 9-0 lead after only five innings. Brandon Wood hit his third homer of the season (now hitting seventh!). (Update: corrected for Matt Brown and Freddie Sandoval, who did not homer in this game. Thanks to Seitz for the correction.)

Rodriguez, Fe: (L, 0-2), 4.1 IP, 9 R, 7 ER, 11 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 8.71 ERA
The Travs are a miserable 0-6 after this outing, which wasn't helped by 40 MPH winds blowing out to center. Aaron Peel homered in the loss.

Bell: (W, 1-0), 7.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 2.31 ERA
Of course, I pulled the plug on Bell before I finished this recap (it's a work in progress) and what does he do but throw a seven-inning shutout with a strikeout per inning. Maybe he saw this coming when he didn't make the latest BA list.

A very nice outing for Jonathan Meloan, who notched his first victory and struck out six through six innings while walking only three. The 51's put up a pair in the first on a bases-loaded groundout by John-Ford Griffin and Angel Chavez's RBI single, and never looked back.

Hammes: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
The Minotaur returns but unfortunately his line was pretty weak in this game, by his lofty standards; of course, he's not inhuman, and two losses isn't the end of the world. It helps ease the sting some that the pitcher who beat him was Cubs #8 pitching prospect Jeff Samardzija, a former two-way player at Notre Dame who owned every receiving record at that school. Samardzija four-hit the Suns through seven, and Tennessee's three relievers were equally stingy, allowing only a walk and a hit through two.

Leach: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1.80 ERA
A tough game to lose, this was a slugfest from almost the beginning as High Desert posted three runs in the first, and the 66ers answered back immediately in the top of the second with three of their own. Inland Empire kept banging away, making the score 9-4 going into the seventh, but the melted down in the bottom half of the frame as Alberto Bastardo and Jason Pratt combined to give up six runs, all earned. High Desert won the game in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out RBI single to Trayvon Robinson.
