News

Reports coming from U.S.S. Mariner indicate that M's outfield prospect Wladimir Balentien has seriously injured his knee. Balentien was considered a candidate for a possible midseason callup as a replacement for Brad Wilkerson if that wasn't working out, and the second best outfielder in their system after Adam Jones, who was traded in the offseason. Balentien was hitting .260/.350/.450 for AAA Tacoma before the injury.

Scores

2008-04-19: Salt Lake 8, Portland 3 #
Coon: 2-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Evans: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Morales: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Brown, M: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Wood: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Patchett: 2-4, 1 2B
Green: (W, 2-0), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 5 BB, 2.74 ERA
Kennard, J: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 7.04 ERA
This is just getting ridiculous: 15-1, and you know the rest. The Bees launched on a road series starting on a Saturday (why they end series on Fridays is beyond my ken), and opened it with a bang, with Matt Brown knocking in four all by himself and collecting a dinger, too. Brown now has an absurd line of .423/.453/.817, and as someone in the comments earlier mentioned, is playing for his future career in the bigs against Brandon Wood.

Nick Green blanked the Beavers through six on only two strikeouts and despite five walks; the secret was a no-hitter. That no-hitter and the shutout were broken up by his relievers, who bent without breaking to preserve the victory. Also: an old friend alert for Mike Megrew, a former Dodger farmhand who pitched the last three frames in this game for Portland, and made the second AAA appearance of his career. He gave up a run and struck out two, and now owns a 1.93 ERA.

2008-04-19: NW Arkansas 1, Arkansas 3 #
Statia: 2-4
Mosebach: (W, 2-0), 9.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 2.33 ERA
Bobby Mosebach pitches a complete game, saves the bullpen, and gives the Travs their first series win of the year. What a relief.
2008-04-19: Rancho Cucamonga 7, Stockton 21 #
Ortiz, W: 2-4, 1 BB
Trumbo: 2-5, 1 K
Toussaint: 3-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Walker: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Phillips: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Herndon: (L, 0-2), 4.0 IP, 9 R, 9 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4 HR, 7.88 ERA
There is no mercy rule in baseball, but you wonder if the home plate umpire didn't get tired of calling "safe" at some point. Stockton scored in crooked numbers in four different frames, including nine in the embarrassing sixth inning alone; two of those runs plated on bases-loaded walks. Starter David Herndon, relievers Bobby Cassevah and Dan Incinelli all gave up four or more runs, including three consecutive homers in the bottom of the fifth. Herndon was supposed to be a groundball pitcher, but he gave up four homers, which is kind of the opposite. Things got so bad that infielder Larry Infante was pressed into mound service for the game's final inning, giving up a pair while actually striking out a batter, for an 18.00 ERA. Seven runs oughta be enough for anybody to win a ballgame, but not tonight.
2008-04-19: Cedar Rapids 2, South Bend 1 #
Fuller: 1-4, 1 3B, 1 K
Romine: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K
Johnson: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI
De Los Santos: 0-4, 3 K
Reckling: 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 4.26 ERA
Chambers: (W, 2-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.04 ERA
Brasier: (S, 4), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Efren Navarro, Jr. hit a one-out double and Tyler Johnson tripled in the next at-bat to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth. Trevor Reckling pitched a solid five innings but got a no decision for his troubles, striking out five along the way. 21-year-old Ryan Brasier notched his fourth save in as many tries.

2008-04-19: AZL Angels did not play
2008-04-19: Sacramento 8, Las Vegas 9 (10 innings) #
Repko: 2-6, 2 K
Maza: 3-6, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Tiffee: 4-5, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Lindsey: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Chavez, A: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Ardoin: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Paul: 3-5, 1 2B
Pinango: 5.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 3.04 ERA
Miller: (H, 3), 0.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 10.61 ERA
Falkenborg: (BS, 2), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 8.10 ERA
Pollok: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.40 ERA
Is it just me or should Jason Repko be tearing up the PCL? He's not, as his .203 average attests, but he came some distance back in that effort with only his fourth multi-hit game all year. He's still mired in a 7-29 skid with a .172/.250/.172 line over his last 7 games.

Greg Miller managed a hold despite giving up a terrible three runs while making only two outs. Fortunately for him, Las Vegas managed to pull together the tying run in the bottom of the ninth on Angel Chavez' double, a sac bunt to get him to third, and closer Jeff Gray's wild pitch. Terry Tiffee hit a walkoff RBI double in the bottom of the tenth to seal the game — with Repko scoring the winning tally.

2008-04-19: Jacksonville 11, Montgomery 7 #
Tomlin: 2-6, 1 RBI, 1 K
De Jesus: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Rivera, R: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Hoffmann: 2-5
Gonzalez, J: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Godwin: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB
McDonald: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.93 ERA
Wade: (H, 1), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.40 ERA
Brazoban: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
James McDonald got his first win on his fourth try, giving up four runs, all earned, with two strikeouts. Reliever Eduardo Sierra came in in the bottom of the seventh and proceeded to walk the bases loaded, and then gave up a single to John Jaso to cashier two of those; that weak performance brought in Cory Wade, who eventually restored order. Yhency Brazoban made his eighth appearance of the year, and has yet to surrender an earned run in 7.2 innings of work.

Juan Gonzalez hit a three-run jack in the top of the sixth, and Rene Rivera hit a leadoff homer in the top of the eighth.

2008-04-19: High Desert 0, Inland Empire 5 #
Rogowski: 2-4, 1 RBI
Bell: 2-4, 1 K
Santana, C: 1-4, 1 RBI
Lizarraga: 2-3
Sexton: (W, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 2.86 ERA
Koss: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 0.82 ERA
Another fine game for Tim Sexton, who improved his record to 2-2, notching a quality start plus with a no-hit shutout through six frames; combined with two relievers, the 66ers pitched a one-hitter. The offense consisted of pecking High Desert to death one and two runs at a time.
2008-04-19: Peoria 9, Great Lakes 7 #
Kanaby: 2-4, 1 BB
Mattingly: 1-4, 1 K
Lambo: 3-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Baez: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Jansen: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Rondon: (L, 2-2), 2.1 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 8.49 ERA
Dutton: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 3.48 ERA
The Loons took four runs back in a game that was a 9-0 runaway in the middle of the third, but the closest they got was 9-7, and that despite four Peoria errors. Starter Daigoro Rondon only lasted 2.2 innings, marking his second start in which he didn't make it out of the third.
