Not Yelling For The Angels, But At Them: Mariners 8, Angels 3
Top 2nd: Meantime, Carlos Silva is mowing down the typically impatient Angels batters, and when one does get on (hello, Casey Kotchman!), Dino Ebel sends him to his doom on a Howie Kendrick single up the middle. I couldn't tell if he was safe or out at the plate (and given the crappy umpiring going on so far in this series, I wouldn't be surprised if he was safe), but how smart is sending one of the team's slowest runners against one of the best arms in baseball? Use your head for something other than a doorstop, Dino.
Bottom 2nd: Kaboom. Bases loaded, one out? It's just a matter of time before this offense punches through. Jeez, guys.
A pop off Sexson and a grounder by Wilkerson and Garland squeaks out of the threat.
Top 3rd: Vlad bounces out to the box and GA misses a homer by about ten feet. Silva plunks Torii Hunter on the wrist, and ouch.
And Kotch tears one down and away into the right field seats, assisted by some Steve Bartman who keeps the ball out of play. 2-2.
Top 4th: The Angels pick one up when GMJ hits into a double play with men on the corners and no outs. 3-2 Angels.
Bottom 4th: After getting two scary warning track outs, Garland gives up a pair of hits — a double to the hobbled Adrian Beltre and a single to Jose Vidro — and a run. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.
And then Garland gives Richie Sexson a cookie on the outer part of the plate. 5-3 Mariners.
Garland gives up yet another single to Brad Wilkerson. If this is the best Garland can do against this lineup, it's gonna be a long season.
Garland finally gets out of it by getting Johjima to bounce to Figgy for the last out. C'mon, you get to two outs, you don't get freaked by having your fielders muff a single play — except that we already saw that in the first.
Bottom 5th: GMJ lets Ichiro's single up the middle get past him, and Rafael Betancourt scores from first. Does anybody here know how to play this game? 6-3 Mariners.
Bottom 8th: Bulger gives up a single and a cookie to Ibañez that ends up in the left-field seats. Darren O'Day had a great seventh, but that's kind of erased now. 8-3 Mariners, and I'm outta here.
Bottom 9th: With two on, Gary Matthews, Jr. has his first good at-bat of the game and grounds out to the pitcher anyway. According to the announcers, Matthews, Jr. tied a franchise record for single game GIDPs (with three). Not what you want.
