Pickoff Moves

Vlad, GA Negative Contributors In 2008

I had been having an argument with Helen over Vlad's apparent failure to do much of anything productive so far this year, and I figured, hey, let's look at his WPA: sure enough, Vlad Guerrero has a -0.24 WPA, worst among all regulars with the same number of appearances except Garret Anderson, whose -0.37 WPA was both expected and unfortunate.

Hanging Chad: Diamondbacks 10, Dodgers 5

Andruw Jones with a .103 average (not that he's the only culprit on this shaky offense), Chad Billingsley just imploding, and I didn't hear a word of any of it.

K-Rod, Kendrick To Miss Time Despite Normal X-Rays

X-Rays on Francisco Rodriguez's ankle turned out normal but he's going to miss time anyway.
Rodriguez said his left ankle, injured when he stepped in a hole on the Angel Stadium mound last summer, bothered him over the winter, which raises the question:

Why, if his ankle wasn't 100%, did the Angels allow him to throw 25 1/3 innings in the Venezuelan winter league, more than Rodriguez threw the previous two winters combined?

"He's always been straight-up with us as far as how he feels, and if he felt he was setting his ankle back, he would have stopped pitching," Scioscia said. "We monitor him very closely, and we were comfortable with it. He felt good when he came to spring training."

Howie Kendrick also got a clean bill from his x-rays, but he, too, will miss time with a jammed thumb.

Also: Chris Bootcheck threw 47 pitches in a minor league game in Arizona. He will start a rehab assignment in Rancho this weekend.

Comments:
I'm not so sure it's a matter of the team "allowing" K-Rod to pitch in the winter league. In the past, they've asked him not to, and he's basically told them, "Up yours."

Still, it seems pretty stupid, particularly for a guy heading into his free agency year. If his ankle hasn't healed in 8 months, I seriously doubt that an extra five days will make a difference (though it might help his right foot, if that one isn't too badly damaged from the other day). Also, a negative x-ray doesn't say much. X-rays don't really show ligament damage, as I understand it.

I have never said Vlad has not been a negative contributor to this point in the season. In fact, I've specifically conceded that he's hit into too many double plays. All I've been saying is to give him some time. He will contribute.

Sweetie, it's only the second week of the season. You don't need to get out the razors yet.

Please write more negative posts about Vlad and GA in the future. :)
