Psycho Billy: Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 4
Bad enough that Billingsley was "dominant" in the strikeout-only sense, while surrendering an early and apparently insurmountable lead; while he was the proximate and majoritarian albatross in this game, Matt Kemp helped out, too, with a fielding error and a big-time choke at the plate with the bases juiced and one out.
About the only entertaining part of the game was watching Jeff Kent sneer at second base umpire Andy Fletcher for an arguably blown call on an area code play in the top of the ninth; Kent swiped the bag with his foot and threw the ball. The TV replay was inconclusive, but umpires give that all the time on double plays. It earned him and Joe Torre an ejection, which is odd, because Torre strikes me as so tranquil that it would take an H-bomb to move him.
Good news/bad news:
- Bad news: with Kemp's screwups in the field and at the plate today, I can see Pierre's name in tomorrow's lineup already.
- Good news: Despite the loss, the Dodgers still aren't in last place. Thanks to a 1-0 loss to San Francisco, the Padres are now in the cellar with a 9-14 record, a half-game back of the 9-13 Dodgers. Tim Lincecum is now 4-0 with a scary sick 1.23 ERA.
