Winnings Eater: Rangers 10, Angels 4

The last time the Angels lost the first home series of the season against Texas was in 2004, when Ramon Ortiz was still impersonating a major league starter, and John Lackey was still a headcase. If you're looking for recent precedent, that's a good one — the Angels went to the postseason that year — but at the same time, it's Texas, with Vicente Padilla on the mound. Padilla, in case you didn't know, had an ungodly 8.04 road ERA last year, though much of that came from various arm strains that plagued him all year.

Padilla gave up hits all afternoon, accounting for all 12 Angels hits. Fortunately for him, the Angels only got a couple home runs, both solo shots, a double by Mike Napoli, and the rest were singles. Vlad hit into his third double play of the season, and shares the league lead in that dubious distinction (with Justin Morneau of the Twins). Even more humiliating, the Angels didn't even reach base against any of the Rangers' usually leaky bullpen; Joaquin Benoit struck out the side in the eighth, including Vlad, GA, and Torii Hunter.

Meantime, Jon Garland was leaving stuff up, with predictable results: a pair of home runs, and seven runs total. Gerald Laird, who called Westminster home some years ago, posted a career record six RBIs and tied his career mark of two dingers in a single game. It probably also said something that the home radar gun was turned off when Scot Shields entered the game; while he didn't have his best stuff ever, he looked sharper than he has when he was truly bad, limiting Texas to a single over one frame.

The radio announcers said the Rangers have beaten the Angels in eight of their last nine meetings. It's time to do something about that.
