The Bees finish their magical April 23-2, a franchise record; they did it with a homer-studded finale on the road against Memphis, getting longballs from Freddie Sandoval, Terry Evans, Dee Brown, and Adam Pavkovich. Giancarlo Alvarado got his second with with a strong six-inning shutout that saw him strike out five.

The Bees' website has a Kevin T. Czerwinski article on their special feat.

"To tell you the truth, it is pretty unbelievable," said Brandon Wood, who was called up to the Angels on Sunday night. "Day in and day out, just winning games. I've never seen a pitching staff, hitters and a defense on the same page doing what we were doing. We were first in hitting in the PCL, first in ERA and I think first in defense. You just don't see that.
2008-04-30: Tulsa 1, Arkansas 0 #
Statia: 0-4
Denham: (L, 1-3), 8.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 0.39 ERA
You can't fault the pitcher when he throws eight innings of one-run ball, but the offense didn't put up any runs, so there you go. Each side managed two hits, but Tulsa managed to get Tony Blanco on base thanks to 3B Corey Smith's fielding error, to second on a Tim Duff passed ball, and home on Dan Denham's balk.
2008-04-30: Rancho Cucamonga vs. Lancaster: Postponed #

Brazoban: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.00 ERA
A terrible environment for pitching on both sides, as six balls left the park on a night where the wind was blowing 31 MPH out to right. The 51's put up ten runs in the seventh, but it only got them closer. Homers by Luis Maza, Terry Tiffee, and Andy LaRoche all homered. Miguel Pinango took the worst of the beating, nine runs all earned in only 3.2 IP. Yhency Brazoban was the only Las Vegas pitcher unscored upon.

Really impressive run by the Bees; kudos to them. Who's this Dan Denham guy? And how does he have three losses with an ERA under 1.00?

Denham was a former first-round pick of the Indians in the 2001 draft (17th overall), signing for a $1.86M bonus. The very next year, he didn't even make BA's top ten prospect list, a bad sign By 2006, BA had all but labeled him a bust, but the 2001 draft is pretty widely considered to be a weak one. On the other hand, his ERAs at AAA have never been very good, and one of the full seasons when he was good, he was also playing in a pitcher's league (the Sally League).

Another thing of note about Denham: crappy peripherals (5.48 K/9, 13/14 K/BB, .913 WHIP, 0.81 G/F). He'll plummet back to earth soon enough.
