News
- Clayton Kershaw could
be called up to the majors soon following a two-out start
from which he was pulled for no apparent reason. Kershaw had
no idea he would be pulled:
"I had no idea," Kershaw said. "I thought it was just a regular start tonight. When I got two outs, I saw the bullpen warming up, and I thought he was just throwing to get ready for later in the game. But they took me out. It wasn't (the Jacksonville coaching staff's) choice, it wasn't my choice, it's just what you've got to do sometimes. I don't know anything about it, I don't know why yet—hopefully it's good, but we'll see how it goes."
- Chone Figgins was
out of the lineup today after playing for the first time since
returning from the DL yesterday; he blames the artificial turf.
"That turf did a little deal on me," said Figgins, who was on the DL because of a right hamstring strain. "It doesn't give. At home, when I was running, it wasn't sore at all. Monday, [after working out in Toronto], it was sore, and after [Wednesday] night it was sore, so that tells me it was the turf."
- Blake DeWitt's success has him in demand in Sikeston, MO; he's slated to have a parade in his honor when he returns home this winter, as a follow-on to the "Summer of Blake". Sikeston station KRHW has joined the Dodgers radio network "contingent up on DeWitt being on the major league roster"; if DeWitt is sent down to AAA Las Vegas, the station will try to get broadcasting rights to the 51's. Let's hope they're with the Dodgers for a good long while.
- CanuckDodger brought up today at DT that, despite my comments yesterday, Given Kutz hasn't given up any runs ... in only three games in the Midwest League. Kutz was demoted to Great Lakes before his May 17 appearance.
- The Padres have made the "wholesale" changes to the roster earlier promised by GM Kevin Towers, calling up four: RHP Jared Wells, Mike Adams and Josh Banks from AAA Portland, and catcher from Double-A San Antonio, Colt Morton. The team DFA'd Justin Germano and optioned Joe Thatcher to Portland.
- A fond farewell to Bryan Smith, who wrote his valedictory column for Baseball Prospectus today; he will move to MLBAM. Good luck, Bryan, and hoping to read you there. Sadly, it doesn't look like the Dirtbags will make the Fullerton regional.
- Update: Preston Mattingly was disabled with a hamstring injury.
