Notes From Last Night's Games
- Laundry Streaks Washed Away: Both the Red Sox (8-3 loss to Oakland) and Chisox (4-3 loss to the Angels) had winning streaks come to an end.
- Seattle Phew: Andy Pettitte struck out a season-high nine batters on the way to a 13-2 domination of Seattle. Things have been tough lately for the M's; perhaps in response, manager John McClaren was ejected in the bottom of the three-run second inning for arguing balls and strikes. The Mariners have lost four straight, during which time Seattle starters have failed to even make it out of the fifth (and twice didn't even get into the fourth), surrendered 30 runs, 29 earned, and have each delivered up one home run. In Jarrod Washburn's abysmal May 21 start, it was a grand slam.
- Ejections And Suspensions In San Diego: Former Angel and current Padre hitting coach — now, there's a job with a short tenure — Wally Joyner was suspended for two games for coming onto the field to argue a call on Wednesday. Reds manager Dusty Baker was ejected from yesterday's Reds/Padres contest for bumping umpire umpire Eric Cooper during an argument in the seventh inning. The Reds eventually won that latter contest, 3-2.
- Barry Zito Turns It Around! Still a loser but no longer winless, San Francisco's $126 million man, Barry Zito, got his first season victory last night in a contest against the Marlins, 8-2; he's 1-8 on the season. Factoid: Omar Vizquel got an intentional pass in yesterday's game, the 20th of his career, but what's even weirder is he got a career record three on May 11 when he was batting eighth, all of which were successful from the Phillies' perspective. (Philadelphia lost that game anyway, 4-3.)
