Rays Out-Angel Angels, Sweep: Rays 8, Angels 5
General comments:
- Good for Mike for installing Reggie Willits at the top of the lineup. GMJ's contract dictates he is playing ahead of Reggie, but Willits is the better player, and it's not especially close (even if you account for Willits' inexperience in center field). Unfortunately, his leadoff walk in the first was the only time on base he had. Given more at-bats, that could change.
- It was Vlad's first multi-hit game since May 6 against Kansas City, and only his 16th RBI of the year.
- Normally I would say that Anderson should not be batting cleanup with Casey Kotchman in the same lineup, but he actually had a good game, going 2-for-4 and driving in two.
- Justin Speier should not be pitching close games ahead of Scot Shields at this point.
- Ervin Santana was due to have a bad game sooner or later. This one had a couple really bad calls, one in the first that should have had B.J. Upton out on an attempted steal. Instead, the game got out of hand and Santana had his worst game of the season. I'll still take those six wins.
- The win put the Rays five games over .500 for the first time in franchise history, and marked only the second sweep of the Angels by Tampa Bay in history.
