Reds Tee Off Lieber: Reds 9, Cubs 0

Jon Lieber is having a bad day for the Cubs, giving up four home runs in the same frame, three of them solo shots (albeit to the bottom of the order). It's 5-0 Reds, and only the second inning.

Update: Lieber doesn't come out for the third, and that's all for him. Via David Pinto, Reds beat reporter John Fay says this is only the second time in Cubs history that a pitcher has given up four home runs in one inning, and ties a club record for single-inning home runs for the Reds. The last time was on August 17, 1996 against the Rockies at then-Cinergy Field, with Steve Reed tossing BP on the mound for the Rocks; Eddie Taubensee, Reggie Sanders, Jeff Branson and Barry Larkin did the honors at the plate.

Incidentally, former Ranger pitching prospect Edinson Volquez is throwing a 2-hit shutout through four. I wonder if they miss him in Arlington...

Top 7th: The Reds homered in two more innings, with Brandon Phillips getting one in the fifth and Joey Votto collecting two more, one each in the fifth and the sixth. The Cubs have only surrendered seven home runs in one game seven times in the Retrosheet era; the Reds have only done it five times in the Retrosheet era. It's the first time Votto has hit three dingers in one game.

David Pinto informs us that Dusty Baker is up to his old tricks, allowing Volquez to stay out on a wet mound (the game is being played under on-and-off rain) and throw 118 pitches.

Update: And it's over. The Cubs failed to get a baserunner past second, and Volquez struck out ten. The last time the Cubs lost by nine or more in a shutout was a 9-0 blanking by Florida at Wrigley on May 30, 2007.

Votto's got two more now.

I can't believe that the Reds hired Dusty Baker. Then again, the GM who made that decision has since been fired. Seriously, though: for the first time in over 20 years (since the days of Jose Rijo & Tom Browning in the mid-1980s) the Reds actually have a couple of good young pitchers in Volquez and Cueto, and Baker is going to destroy them just as he ruined Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. It's a shame. I hope Jocketty brings in someone who's competent, and soon.

On the other hand, everyone was wowed by Bronson Arroyo a couple years ago, and now he looks awful and everyone wants to know why.

Speaking of shellackings, check out the Dodgers-Mets contest.
