Torre's Robotic Bullpen Usage Vacates Billingsley Victory: Mets 3, Dodgers 2
After seven innings of excellence from Chad Billingsley (and numerous missed opportunities by the Dodgers to really put the game away offensively), Joe Torre put Jonathan Broxton in for his fourth call in five games. Broxton gave up three runs on four hits, surrendering the lead only after pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and not Torre to the mound. He clearly had nothing after the first three batters reached on hits against him; why leave him out there?
Torre eventually pulled Broxton after he gave up the go-ahead run, and Joe Beimel finished the inning uneventfully.
What an embarrassment.
Top 9th: Billy Wagner strikes out all three Dodgers he faces, including Blake DeWitt on a called third strike that quite frankly was low and off the plate. What a humiliating loss, and this one is really on Torre's shoulders.
