Games, Games, Games

Error, Error: Angels 5, Mariners 4

A great game by Joe Saunders, who gave up only one earned run; but then there were a couple of errors in the fifth that let the M's really get a look at the game, giving up three runs, all unearned. Not a good idea, guys. Oddly, the Angels scored all their runs against supposed second ace Eric Bedard while failing to do much of anything against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

Thanks to all the zero frames, it was a fast game, at 2:35. If MLB really wants games to go by quickly, maybe they should just raise the mound height six inches and make the strike zone top of the shoulders to the hollow of the knees.

With the win, Hokie Joe is first in the majors AL to nine wins, and go him — and go Angels.

Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robot Made Outta Nails: Rockies 3, Dodgers 0

The Dodgers' inability to support Brad Penny when he finally had a good night has to chafe some, and the Rockies have been losing — a lot — so it's no surprise this spilled over into a bench-clearing brawl (hat tip to seidburns850 for the clip):

Lotsa fun, that. Kemp and Torrealba were both ejected, and both face a possible suspension for their actions, which he now disavows as dumb:

"It happened too fast, it just was dumb on both of our parts, and basically it is what it is, so we'll see what happens after this," Kemp said. "If you think about it now, it's really stupid because it's not going to help your team win any; it's just going to make things a little bit harder."

Happy Birthday, Honey: Cubs 9, Padres 6

The one we actually saw (in honor of my wife's birthday), the Padres actually took the early lead against a very shaky Jason Marquis. The Cubs came back smartly just in time for him to get his third win; he came within an out of a quality start, not something he's liable to do much of this year with the way he's been pitching; he's been a first half pitcher with a career 4.29 ERA before the break and 4.97 after.

Atypically for Petco, this game featured three homers by the visitors, one each by Geovany Soto, Mark DeRosa, and Alfonso Soriano, Soriano's a two-out, three-run blast to left in the top of the eighth that provided a useful cushion, because the Cubs' bullpen was about to leak runs in the bottom of the frame. Kevin Hart gave up three runs — one on a bases-loaded walk — but Lou Piniella was pretty unhappy with his bullpen in general, ransacking his relief corps in hopes of finding the right piece. No more egregious example was to be found than Neil Cotts, who was brought in, gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Edgar Gonzalez (brother of starting first baseman Adrian), and got the hook. Bobby Howry, the inning's third pitcher and the Cubs' sixth, finally restored order, but what a mess.

Kerry Wood struck out two of the three batters he faced, allowing a leadoff double to Adrian Gonzalez but that was it. This is a bullpen that's going to give the Northsiders fits all season, but they got out of this one with their ninth straight win, the longest active streak in the majors, and still the best record in the majors.

Comments:
Saunders is first in the American League to nine - Brandon Webb has ten wins.

Ah, thanks for the correction.
