Minor League Scorebook

News

Used to dominating, Nick Adenhart got overwhelmed at the major league level ($):
With the weight of Angels Stadium and nearly 40,000 fans on every pitch, Adenhart lasted just two innings. He allowed three hits and walked five.

"I started aiming the ball," he said.

Afterward, in the dugout, following a quick word by Angels manager Mike Scioscia, Adenhart flung his glove on the bench and sat, staring out toward the mound, a place where he had always been in control.

"We always say the third tier in the deck will get you every time," said Angels righthander and former Salt Lake Bee Jered Weaver afterward. "It's not 2,000 people anymore.

Nick's K/BB ratio is a problem, something he's working on.

Scores

2008-06-05: Salt Lake 4, Colorado Springs 5 #
Brown, M: 3-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Brown, D: 2-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Wilson: 1-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Loux: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 4.33 ERA
O'Day: (BS, 2)(L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.11 ERA
Darren O'Day: not having such a good time of it since returning to the PCL. After a 1-2-3 seventh, he gave up three consecutive hits in the wrong order (single, single, double) to start off the eighth; his outfield defense finally made the first out when Joe Koshansky tried to leg out a triple. He plunked Edwin Bellorin, the next batter, but finally got Dustin Mohr to ground into a double play to end the misery.

Dee Brown and Matt Brown both homered in the loss, Dee Brown's a two-run shot in the top of the third. Shane Loux pitched a quality start plus but was denied the win by Darren O'Day's late collapse.

2008-06-05: Arkansas 7, NW Arkansas 1 #
Czarniecki: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Stavisky: 2-5, 2 K
Statia: 2-5, 1 2B
Ortega: (W, 6-3), 7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3.93 ERA
Helped by a 17 MPH wind, the Travs scored in six of the nine innings, twice in the first and that was all they needed as Danny Ortega posted a quality start plus for his second consecutive win. Jordan Czarniecki homered, a first inning two-run jack, for his fourth of the year. Adam Greenberg tripled to lead off the frame but was immediately replaced with a pinch runner after injuring his leg. The game broke up a 20-inning scoreless skid by Arkansas offense.
2008-06-05: Rancho Cucamonga 7, Lancaster 9 (7 innings) #
Bourjos: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Mount: 1-4, 1 RBI
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Conger: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Nieves: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Infante: 3-4, 1 RBI
Bell: (L, 5-5), 4.1 IP, 6 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.69 ERA
Browning: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 4.40 ERA
Well, at least it wasn't gusting to 65 MPH... The Quakes played with a 24 MPH wind at game time, and the results showed; while Quakes Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger homered (Conger in just his fifth appearance of the year), Trevor Bell didn't get out of the fifth and surrendered six runs, two earned, thanks to a first inning fielding error by second baseman Ryan Mount.
2008-06-05: Rancho Cucamonga 1, Lancaster 14 (7 innings) #
Bourjos: 0-2, 1 K
Mount: 0-3, 1 K
Conger: 0-2
Trumbo: 0-3
Phillips: 1-1, 1 BB
Leon: (L, 1-2), 0.1 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 9.00 ERA
Lancaster got the sweep, and it was immediately apparent how this one was going to go down, as the JetHawks scored seven in the first and chased emergency starter Sammy Leon (in only his second start of the year) after only one out. Amazingly, neither side gave up any home runs, despite the insane winds.
2008-06-05: Burlington 0, Cedar Rapids 1 #
Fuller: 1-4
Romine: 2-4
Brossman: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Johnson: 2-3
Anton: (W, 7-3), 8.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 2.13 ERA
Brasier: (S, 9), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1.32 ERA
Jay Brossman's solo sixth inning homer proved to be the difference as Michael Anton pitched another gem; of course, he's 23 and should be dominating at this level. The real tests will be Rancho and Arkansas.
2008-06-05: Orem did not play
2008-06-05: AZL Angels did not play
2008-06-05: Tucson 3, Las Vegas 13 #
Repko: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Paul: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Lindsey: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB
LaRoche: 0-5
Griffin: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Ellis: 2-4, 2 3B, 4 RBI
Orenduff, J: 1-3, 1 K
Orenduff, J: (W, 2-2), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 4.97 ERA
Troncoso: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 6.14 ERA
Miller: 0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 5.74 ERA
Brazoban: (H, 2), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 12.38 ERA
The 51's posted five runs in the second and never looked back to make Justin Orenduff a winner (in the minimum to qualify) for the second time this year. John Lindsey homered, a three-run jack in the eighth, but there were plenty of extra-base hits to go around, too, as A.J. Ellis tripled twice, and John-Ford Griffin doubled.
2008-06-05: Jacksonville did not play
2008-06-05: Inland Empire 8, Lake Elsinore 5 #
Santana, C: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Locke: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Gallagher: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Giles: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Pedroza: 2-3
Wall: (W, 4-3), 5.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 7 K, 3 BB, 6.17 ERA
Koss: (S, 2), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.76 ERA
Austin Gallagher's seventh-inning inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh was the offensive highlight of the game. Carlos Santana hit a conventional one with two outs in the top of the first; in all, the 66ers got five extra-base hits in this game.

Gary Bennett is hitting .143 in his third rehab start with Inland Empire.

2008-06-05: West Michigan 3, Great Lakes 9 #
Kanaby: 3-4, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Lambo: 4-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Silverio: 1-5, 3 K
Mattingly: 2-5, 1 K
Mathews: 0-1, 1 RBI, 4 BB
Baez: 0-4, 1 BB
Johnson: (W, 7-2), 5.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 2.82 ERA
Sanfler: (S, 1), 3.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 2.80 ERA
Andrew Lambo did almost everything in this game, with a near-perfect game at the plate and a solo homer in the bottom of the third.
2008-06-05: Ogden did not play
2008-06-05: GCL Dodgers did not play

If you haven't read it yet, there's this very interesting article about Michael Anton that appeared in this Cedar Rapids paper last week. It explains his late start (car accident), and the strange path he took into the Angels organization.

Sounds promising. Hard to argue with the 89-18 K-BB ratio he put up over 68 innings last season. Even if he's striking out fewer this season, his peripherals otherwise look pretty solid.

It's not like the farm is flush with crafty lefties. I hope this one works out.

Wow, interesting article. Thanks for the link.
