Saunders, Vlad, And The Admiral: Angels 6, Phillies 2
A remarkably taut game through seven, and one that Hokie Joe dominated in the first six; he gave up a pair in the seventh, but luckily for him, the Phillies essentially ran themselves out of the inning, snuffing out a nascent rally. Vlad banged a couple over the left field fence, and improbably, Erick Aybar welted one out over right, snuck over the low fence there to make it 4-2 and give Saunders the win. The Angels picked up a couple more in the ninth on Juan Rivera's third RBI of the year on a scoring fielder's choice (really, a poor choice by Philly shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who had no play at the plate and would have been close on a play at first).
Scot Shields had the unusual honor of striking out four batters in one inning in this game; the last Angel to do so was Chuck Finley on August 15, 1999. The win made Hokie Joe the first in the American League to get to eleven wins, and tied with Brandon Webb in the majors.
