Mathis' Miracle: Angels 3, Indians 2
You know, if you had told me Jeff Mathis would hit the game-winning home run in this one, I wouldn't have believed you. As it was, we had to give our tickets away to this one because my in-laws were coming to town and we had to meet them at LAX. I followed the last few innings of this one on my phone at the airport and in the restaurant where we subsequently ate dinner, and I'm not sure I still believe it quite.
Actually, Mathis had already driven in a run previously and scored two total in the game, so the amazement was that much magnified. Jered Weaver ran into trouble and got yanked after only three with shoulder tightness, though he isn't expected to miss his next start. Darren Oliver came through to pitch 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, and a tag team of Jose Arredondo, Scot Shields, and Francisco Rodriguez nursed a win out of a 3-2 lead earned in the fifth.
And unusually, we'll be in the stands tomorrow.
