Minor League Scorebook
News
- Carlos Santana of Inland Empire was named an Offensive Player of the Week, as was Pedro Baez of Ogden.
- In the Pitcher of the Week award, Cedar Rapids reliever-turned-(back to)-starter Esmerlin Jimenez won the honor for the Midwest League. Jimenez has yet to allow a run in any of four starts.
- More on the Angels' catching and roster shuffles: Anel De Los Santos will head to Arkansas (which you already knew), with 2008 12th-round draftee Braulio Pardo getting called up from Orem. Orem's current roster page shows Beau Brooks and Ivan Villaescusa as catchers.
- 51's starting pitcher Jason Johnson will not pitch at
the AAA All-Star Game.
"It's an honor, but my goal is to get to the big leagues, not to make an All-Star team in Triple A," said Johnson, 34, who is 10-5 with a 4.22 ERA for Las Vegas. "I figured there's a lot of young guys in Triple A who deserve a chance and I'm not going to take one of their spots."
...
"He's been our main horse since (starter Eric Stults) went up (to the Dodgers)," 51s manager Lorenzo Bundy said. "His first couple of starts weren't very good, but after that he's been our big dog, giving us quality innings and chances to win ballgames.
"Realistically, he's not a Triple-A pitcher; he's a big league pitcher. He's been a savior for us."
- Jason Schmidt will throw 65 pitches in his rehab start tonight.

Heath Totten earned his second win since returning to the Dodgers system, but it was mostly the offense that carried the day on a 106°F evening. The 51's took a 2-0 lead in the first on Terry Tiffee's two-run jack in the first and never looked back. Ramon Martinez also homered, a one-out solo shot in the seventh. B.J. LaMura earned an unusual four-inning save, his first of the year.

Clayton Kershaw's second quality start since returning to AA, and his most dominant in that span. Unfortunately, Kershaw's offense was only able to tie a 3-0 lead he allowed in the second, and the game went to extras. Bryan Byrne hit a leadoff, walkoff homer in the top 15th off, making Adolfo Gonzalez a loser for the second time this season.
