Padres Deal Randy Wolf To Astros For Pitching Prospect

The Padres have traded starter Randy Wolf to Houston for pitching prospect RHP Chad Reineke (2008 stats). Reinecke was the seventh ranked prospect in the Astros' farm system going into the season according to the Baseball America 2008 Prospect Handbook, which cited inconsistent command and mechanics as problems. Moved around between starting and relief, Reineke is about what you could expect to pry loose from another team given the weak return Houston got. He'll move to AAA Portland.

Randy Wolf hasn't been all that this year, and despite playing in a home park that favors pitchers like no other anywhere else in baseball, the ex-Dodger is doing appreciably worse this year, with a 6-10 record, a 4.74 ERA, and a 82 ERA+. Those noting that his ERA was only a hundredth of a point worse than his 2007 figure with the Dodgers should also note that the league ERA has declined by about 0.70 from last year to this, which may be a function of the fact that we haven't gone through August and September yet. This is probably a pretty even trade for both teams.
