Casey Blake helped out his new team almost immediately, going 2-for-3 and scoring a run, the only Dodger outside of Derek Lowe with multiple hits. The Dodgers got all their offense against ex-Dodger Odalis Perez, who really hasn't been good since 2004; his left-handedness keeps getting him jobs, though. Matt Kemp and Nomar both homered off Odalis, Kemp's a two-run jack in the first. I was happy for the Dodgers to get the win but not in a way that seemed, no matter how temporarily, to validate Ned's scheming.Derek Lowe pitched a brilliant game, allowing one hit through eight innings, with Joe Beimel and Cory Wade left to clean up in the ninth.
T.J. Simers Likes The Blake Trade, And That's Enough For Me
I love it when the Times' columnists confirm my opinion of a bad deal. T.J. Simers praises it:If Ned Colletti says a third baseman from Cleveland, whom Indians fans didn't particularly like, makes the Dodgers better -- that's good enough for me.Is that sarcasm?
The Dodgers wouldn't have him working as general manager, now would they, if he didn't know what he was doing.No, that would be the deal that brought Andre Ethier to the team for a player that everyone in baseball knew had to be traded, Milton Bradley. It was an incredible haul considering the gun-to-the-head aspect.And based on everything Colletti knows about baseball, he said, "Casey Blake is a solid player."

In fact, it might be the best deal Colletti has ever made, because the Dodgers don't have to pay Blake anything to play third base, the Indians paying his entire $6.1-million salary.

... by "helping" the Giants. God, how did I miss this? Ed Creech was Kevin Malone's scouting director, and was responsible for the empty cupboards in both LA and in Pittsburgh. From today's DT thread (comment 380 by Eric Enders):It's pretty typical of the Pirates to take a guy who led the NCAA in hitting home runs [John Van Benschoten], turn him into a pitcher, and have him become (quite literally) the worst pitcher in the history of baseball.The scouting director who oversaw most of those disastrous Pirates drafts was Ed Creech, the same guy who wrecked the Dodger farm system before Logan White was hired. I'm amazed he was able to get another job after his tenure with the Dodgers.
