Two Games
The Silence Of The Bats: Indians 3, Angels 2
Jose Arredondo posted his first really bad performance of the season, and all things considered, it wasn't that huge of a meltdown, though one of his missteps was a bases-loaded walk to drive in the winning run. Jered Weaver continues to unimpress, leaving the game after 5.1 and throwing 105 pitches. At this rate, next year he'll have a five-ish ERA and the team will be thinking about sending him down, except without any real pitching depth unless Nick Adenhart can figure things out between then and now.Juan Rivera hit his eighth homer of the year, but the Angels grounding into three double plays was the real story of this disappointing game.
Dodgers Continue Their Magical Mystery Tour Against Contenders: Dodgers 5, Brewers 3
The wolf is hardly at the door for the Brewers, but neither can they seem to make much progress. Despite a June 6 trade for C.C. Sabathia and the best record in the NL Central since that deal, the Cubs remain stubbornly in first place in the division, in no small part thanks to a four-game sweep at home that knocked them to five games back in the division race, which is where they have more-or-less stayed ever since, their recent eight-game win streak (snapped by a loss in the final game of the recent Padres series) notwithstanding. Well, back to five and a half for them, and for the Dodgers, tied up for the division lead, still. The Brewers got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a Gabe Kapler home run, and added to it in the second on Jason Kendall's RBI single. The Dodgers tied it in the fourth on Casey Blake's two-run jack, and pulled ahead in the fifth on a Jeff Kent RBI single. The Dodgers got an insurance run in the eighth on Russell Martin's solo homer.
Chad Billingsley got his 12th win of the season with a fine performance, striking out five. Joe Beimel made a critical relief appearance following a less-than-successful outing by Ramon Troncoso, coming in against Prince Fielder, and got his man to ground out to first with one out; that set up Jonathan Broxton, who finished the game uneventfully.
Finally: can somebody fix the TV broadcast? "Technical difficulties" are becoming a commonplace problem lately.
