Angels Move Darren O'Day Off 40-Man Roster

Ending a season that started with a Hollywood note, the Angels moved reliever Darren O'Day off the 40-man roster, replacing him with Salt Lake reliever Rafael Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, 24, divided the 2008 season between Double-A Arkansas and Salt Lake. He was 2-4 with 11 saves and a 1.86 ERA in 42 appearances at Arkansas, and he was 2-0 with a 6.28 ERA in nine games at Salt Lake.
Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't seem to be much of an improvement.

Update 10/23: The Rev reminds me that O'Day had a torn labrum and will probably spend all of 2009 rehabbing. If he's anywhere near ready for 2009 spring training, it's all but certain he will get an invite. (And incidentally, thanks for the link.)

Maybe not, but Rodriguez is two years younger. O'Day's sidewinding gimmick didn't seem to work too well in the show. One problem was that O'Day is really only a one or two-inning guy, and the role he filled is really meant for a guy who can go longer than that if necessary. With some starting experience, Rodriguez may be a better fit in that regard. In any event, O'Day cleared waivers and was assigned to SLC, so he's still in the organization. It looks like Rodriguez would have been a minor league free agent, and the Angels have been criticized in recent years for letting a few arms escape via that route.

Ho-hum, though.

I don't think it was the sidewinding thing was intrinsically bad as that he would go for long stretches where he couldn't throw a strike, and then batters knew they were going to get an 88 MPH "fastball". O'Day's got a decent shot at being useful, but it occurred to me that he might have been called up a bit prematurely, especially since he was only playing at AA before 2008.
