The Seven Scariest Words To Come From MLBAM This Year

"New 2009 MLB.TV Media Player Coming Soon". Seriously, how many times do we go through this where they break stuff?

Comments:
MLBAM agreed to ditch Microsoft Silverlight/Windows Media in favor of Adobe Flash to deliver their video (Google "mlbam adobe"), which would indeed necessitate an entirely new player. There's more potential upside here than downside, especially for Mac users who hated installing Silverlight or Linux users left out in the cold, though it does mean my app which let you watch/listen to games on Windows Mobile devices won't work anymore.

Sure, but why couldn't they revert to the one they used in 2006 or 2007?

'Cause of $$, of course! I'm sure they liked whatever partnership they were getting with Adobe better than the one they had with Microsoft.

If you're asking why not use the Flash-based player they had in 2006/2007, that player only used Flash for the browser window setup; the video itself was still Windows Media, and you still needed Windows Media Player installed to watch the streams. In fact, if you knew what you were doing, you didn't actually need Flash to get the stream going. Now, the entire video delivery format itself will be Flash, like (I think) YouTube's is.
