News
- I pass along the Raw Feed story that the Angels handed out their organizational awards on Friday to Chris Pettit (Player of the Month) and LHP Trevor Reckling (Pitcher of the Month). Alexi Amarista was named Defensive Player of the Month.
- Stephen Smith passes on a Arkansas
Demcrat-Gazette article on the dilapidated state of old Ray
Winder Field. It turns out that the University of Arkansas Medical
Center was slated to buy the property, but then ...
Game over? No. This little drama has more twists, turns and errors than an extra-inning white-knuckler. Short version: Devilish/inane legal details nixed the first round of bidding and the city put Ray Winder Field up for bids a second time. It got two: one from UAMS (again) and another from the Zoo (again). A third party, the Ray Winder Foundation headed up by Rex Nelson and created to keep baseball at the baseball park, dropped out of the picture.
Or did it?
Imagine this scenario: UAMS wins the bid again, which is a strong possibility considering that the med center comes with cash in fist. The Zoo would still have to raise $1.6 million for the ballpark by the end of next year. Then find another $15 million for an expansion onto the land. Note: The zoo plan includes incorporating part of the grandstand.
UAMS has backed off on the parking lot. When I met with Dodd Wilson, the departing chancellor of UAMS, he said that the med center could be a decade away from making a decision on what to build on the property. In its current bid, UAMS mentions building a childcare facility or something for the elderly as part of a master plan that would include buying other properties-such as, perhaps, Rick’s Armory that abuts Ray Winder-for the likes of a dental school or bio-tech corridor.
