Two Games

Speier Returns To Dust: Yankees 7, Angels 4

Anthony Ortega somehow managed to get through six and a third while only surrendering one run over a quality start. That in itself is nothing short of astounding, especially against the Yanks, especially in their own park. But then Justin Speier had to ruin the whole thing by giving up three in the eighth; his location, as whenever this happens, seems to be the problem, and by his own admission he was leaving things up again.
"My location's been pretty good," Speier said. "Today it wasn't. If I'm making my pitches, I'm going to get outs. If I don't, they're going to get good wood. I've got a short-term memory."
At least A.J. Burnett didn't leave with a win.

Jeff Weaver, Dodgers Outfield To The Rescue: Dodgers 8, Padres 5

Another — as in the third in a row — bad start for James McDonald, who might be headed to relief after tossing a perfect first and imploding in the second. Jeff Weaver then came on in relief and gave up zero runs through four innings of work (i.e. he pitched to the second out of the sixth); for an encore, he led off the third with a warning track fly ball caught near the wall that presaged a Rafael Furcal double, and homers by Orlando Hudson and Manny Ramirez.

The Dodgers outfield — Matt Kemp in particular — had some excellent defensive play, including a diving, tumbling catch — I seem to recall in the eighth on David Eckstein's pop to shallow center — that required him to evade a diving Orlando Hudson. It looked like it had the potential for a horrible injury, but fortunately neither player was hurt. Definitely a highlight reel maneuver.

Cory Wade, called up just yesterday, also pitched in his first game and earned a hold for his trouble. In fact, outside of Will Ohman, who gave up a pair of runs while only making one out, the Dodgers relief corps held the Padres down the whole game. Now if only they could get some starting pitching...
